A beautifully complex, wonderfully balanced stout. Not as sweet as other chocolate stouts on the market, making for a versatile, very drinkable beer. Silky texture. Notes of molasses, burnt raisin, fig and cocoa powder, with more subtle notes of black licorice, espresso and prune. Dryish, roasted malt finish. A great beer from a great brewery celebrating a great anniversary.
- John Hansell
The nose of this deep and dark stout introduces itself with some distinct chocolate notes, but it’s a gentle introduction, at best. In the body, the subdued nature of the beer continues, with some hints of brown spice up front and dark chocolate rising towards the middle of the palate. All in all, for a beer billed as “Chocolate Indulgence,” the impact of the Belgian chocolate here is rather muted, although the dry, lingering cocoa character in the finish makes me think this could be a lovely partner to foie gras.

John Hansell
John Hansell is an equal-opportunity drinker. He writes about beer, wine and spirits. He is the creator, publisher & editor of Malt Advocate, a magazine for the whisky enthusiast.

Stephen Beaumont
Stephen Beaumont boarded his first plane at the age of 15 and hasn’t looked back since, obsessing about travel to the point that he gets nervous if he doesn’t have a ticket or two stacked on the corner of his desk. When he’s not running around in search of new taste experiences, he makes his home in Toronto, where a new cultural experience is only as far away as the next neighborhood.
