Grapefruit, lemon rind and resinous pine notes leap out of this IPA, which advertises 103.1 IBUs. Thanks to its rather full-bodied demeanor, though, all those IBUs feel a lot more approachable than the numbers would suggest. However, don’t let this beer’s convivial demeanor fool you. Chinookie is a serious IPA for serious IPA drinkers, thanks to the eponymously named Chinook hops, plus Cascade and Centennial. It’s all balanced by a light, yet sturdy and reliable malt presence that keeps everything in check without detracting from the huge hop blast.

I like the idea of an IPA devoted to Chinook: It gives you the opportunity to get to grips with this variety of hop. Like most U.S. IPAs, this amber ale is robust and full-on, but perhaps more obviously bitter on the first sip than others, with malt sweetness well in the background. However, it’s the hop profile that really gives the beer its identity, with pine leading the way and citrus zest in support. The pine is particularly obvious in the long-lasting, solidly dry and bitter finish. It’s too intense for some, perhaps, but hopheads will love it.
