Despite their image, cans have advantages over other packages: no light allowed, lighter, cheaper, safer, more disposable. Here, a golden color is lighter than original IPAs, bright with a hearty, deep ecru head; lingering and luscious. A hop cluster bomb, Humulus lupulus is omnipresent both on the nose and the palate with a long, lingering, pleasantly medicinal aftertaste. We planned a picnic, packed our panniers with spicy BBQ ribs and red beans and rice. With a couple of cans of Caldera, we dined with real class.

An Oregon IPA poured from a can that looks like a T-shirt you’d wear to a Grateful Dead concert has some serious hops expectations to live up to. Caldera IPA doesn’t disappoint. The nose is delightfully bright and fresh, a floral blend of citrus and pine, with an impression of grapefruit growing beside bready flavors that balance the persistent hop character. “Light on the whip” into the finish, managing to leave a big impression without seeming heavy handed. Easily cut through a rich Stilton cheese soup I put it up against.
