Broken Auger Lager

September 16, 2014
Reviewers:Lisa Morrison - Garrett Oliver

Broken Auger LagerBroken Auger Lager

Broken Bow Brewery

Tuckahoe, NY

Broken Auger Lager is brewed with pale, crystal and Munich malts and hopped with Santiam and Hallertau hops.

ABV: 5.2

ABW: 4.1

COLOR: 8

BITTERNESS: 20

ORIGINAL GRAVITY: 1052

AVAILABLE: NY

The malt shines through in this hazy, orange-colored lager, which just recently was available in cans for the first time. Nicely effervescent, with the bubbles percolating just the slightest touch of corn in the aroma to the nose. This dissipates pretty quickly and leaves behind soft, clean aromas of biscuity malt. No corn notes in the flavor, though, which is light and soft, a touch grainy, with just a hint of hops for balance and a refreshingly dry finish. This beer would be a perfect way to end a day of hiking or snowboarding.
- Lisa Morrison
They don’t tell you much on the cans these days—what sort of beer is it? Well, it’s orangey in color, with a stiff haze and a thin foam. The aroma is gently malty, a little fruity, a touch of caramel. There is very little hop aroma. The bitterness is moderate, broad and mildly astringent, followed by simple sweetness and a fuzzy trail-off. Had this can seen better days, perhaps? There just isn’t much “there” there. Freshness might give it better definition.
