The Joseph Huber brewing Co., the second oldest continuously operating brewery in the United States, is celebrating its’ 160th year in business. The brewhouse is a two-vessel system, consisting of a mash/lauter tun and a brewkettle with an average size of 350 barrels. The Solstice Wit is spiced with orange curaçao and coriander.

Hazy bronze beer with light foam and a superb, wonderfully complex aroma of spices, vanilla, marzipan, barley sugar and juicy malt. Rich, chewy grain coats the tongue with hints of nuts, spices and a notable touch of vanilla. Barley sugar makes its presence felt in the lingering, quenching finish with pear drop fruit, a gentle hint of hops and a final twist of spice. A great summer refresher and a fine companion for chicken or other light meats, seafood, pasta dishes or a spicy salad.

There is minimal head, particularly for this essentially effervescent beer type, with minimal aromatics, and the color is odd (more brown than golden), but the taste is nice with a light spice overlay, a well-balanced taste pattern and a friendly, tart palate—quite refreshing.

Proof a beer doesn’t have to be boring to be thirst-quenching. This one has aromas of Bazooka bubble gum, banana taffy and vanilla, with underlying notes of citrus (to wit!), apricot, plum and a hint of clove. On the palate, the notes flip flop, with the refreshing fruit leading, followed by the sweeter notes. Light, grape skin finish.
