Brazil is infamous as the home of the world’s biggest brewer! It’s now becoming famous for many small ones. Belô São Francisco is an excellent example. The deep brown robe is crowned with a cocoa-colored head. The nose is soul satisfying with a full, rich aroma of malt, and then more; a vinous bouquet, a little like wine, the result of an addition of raisins. Easy drinking for a beer of 7.5%; the malt dominates the front of the palate, balanced with the vinous notes at the back. The finish is fresh, clean and satisfying. Damn good with rich foods, like Ossobuco, creamed spinach, and sourdough bread, followed with a selection of artisan cheese.
- Charles Finkel
Big rich fruity/banana and cocoa aroma vaults out of the glass; translucent chestnut brown Belo. Flavor continues in aromatic wake. Though light on the palate, there’s big stuff going on with complexity and finesse. Super clean, creamy yet refreshing—how can this be? Great balance. Smooth clean aftertaste of cocoa and fruit eventually fades, but not before another sip of truly maravilhoso beer from Brazil. Hard to find, but when you do, you’re a winner.
