A government and Carlsberg joint venture controls 99 percent of the Laotian beer market. A deep reddish-brown, with a fleeting head. The soft, roasted, malt flavors are well balanced with a pleasant bitter finish — not complex, but damn good with spicy foods like laap, a national dish made from chopped meat, spices and broth, mixed with crushed fried rice; som moo — barbequed pork spring rolls; and tam mak houng, a raw papaya salad with lime, garlic, chili, peanuts, sugar and fermented fish sauce.

A copper-red amber lager with medium body and strength-emphasized malty sweetness. Mild and almost neutral aroma, though a hint of toasted malt comes through. Hop bitterness is subdued but compensated with quenching and pleasing roast malt bite. Clean, light-bodied and relatively dry, even though sweetness emerges with patience. A great option if available at Asian-themed restaurants.
