Amager is one of the new-wave Scandinavian craft breweries that are challenging bland beer with exciting and dramatic new styles. Pride is jet black with a thick collar of foam and an exotic aroma of wholemeal biscuits, bitter chocolate, licorice, espresso coffee, cocoa beans and floral hops. Bitterness on the palate comes from roasted grain as well as hops, with continuing notes of chocolate and coffee. The finish offers vinous fruit, bitter hops, roasted grain, chocolate, coffee and licorice.

A reddish tinge pierces the stream of beer as it pours, but the color disappears into blackness. The foam doesn’t last, and falls back to a collar. The aroma is inviting, starring the usual suspects of espresso and chocolate, but also giving plenty of hops, black licorice, dark caramel, chocolate chip cookies at the edge of burning. Hop and roast bitterness dive in ferociously, then expand onto a well-tuned palate, very bitter, not too sweet, quite sure of itself. It finishes dry and signs off with a bang. Amager’s pride is well-earned. You can pair it with chocolate, but I’d go for the cheesecake.
