Against The Grain / 3 Floyds Too Dumb To Be Evil

November 23, 2016

Against The Grain / 3 Floyds

Too Dumb To Be Evil
Louisville, Kentucky
Style: Fest Lager ABV: 5.9%
  • Beer of the Moment

First, let’s wish all the cans of this beer (currently wrapped in a protective bubble coating snug inside cardboard boxes and making their way through the various postal systems of this country) a safe journey. Because it’s safe to assume that after two of the country’s more beer-geek-revered breweries—Against the Grain Brewery and 3 Floyds—announced this collaboration, the trading message boards lit up a bit. Expect to see these cans pop up in your news feed over the holiday weekend.

This is certainly a beer to drink fresh, and at 5.9% is a great lead up to the Thursday feast. Delightfully hoppy on the nose with hints of melon, a touch of wet dank weed, and a kiss of pine. All are there for the first sip, but complemented by the softest touch of caramel malt just before the medium bitter finish settles in. A deep, shiny copper in color with a firm head that laces the glass as it empties. It’s subtle in a way that shows great skill and restraint from two breweries that are continuously pushing the boundaries of flavor.

Following an Oct. 28 release at Against the Grain in Louisville, Kentucky, a limited amount was sent out into the world. While fest beers are typically enjoyed when most autumn leaves are still on the trees, this one holds up to the more raw conditions being felt by most this Thanksgiving week (especially in the east and midwest).

It’s a warm autumn breeze in a glass, an American interpretation of a classic fall style, for when one isn’t enough.
