Heavy Seas Holds Contest for ‘Talk Like a Pirate Day’

By Staff - August 14, 2014

(Press Release)

BALTIMORE, MD—Heavy Seas Beer will celebrate “International Talk Like A Pirate Day” on Friday, September 19th. This holiday was created by John Baur and Mark Summers in 2002 when they were playing a game of racquetball. One of them yelled “Aaarrr!” in pain from the sport, which led them to begin talking like pirates for fun. The men then wondered why there wasn’t a holiday where everyone could enjoy talking like a pirate. The rest was history, and the two friends established that “International Talk Like A Pirate Day” would be on September 19th every year, To learn more, visit: http://www.talklikeapirate.com/piratehome.html

In honor of this holiday, Heavy Seas is having a Pirate Joke Submission Contest where fans can submit jokes to a special Heavy Seas email address: [email protected] Video submissions are accepted and encouraged. The top 10 jokes will be released on social media, once per day leading up to September 19th. The winning joke will be announced on September 19th, and the winner will receive a large prize including airfare to and from Baltimore (unless the person is from nearby, then they will be compensated with extra perks such as tickets to a sporting event, a restaurant gift certificate, etc.), a brewery visit, a hotel room, and a Caribbean Cruise for two departing from Baltimore.

Heavy Seas will also celebrate the holiday with simultaneous cask tappings at 6:00pm in many locations up and down the East Coast. Cask beer is an old-fashioned way of presenting draft beer. For ITLAPD, the cask will be Loose Cannon IPA with grapefruit zest, which is a first time release outside of the brewery. At the participating locations, there will be many give-a-ways for fans including t-shirts, eye patches, stickers, temporary tattoos, and a backdrop for pictures.

The cask tapping will be an attempt to set the record for the most casks of beer being tapped simultaneously in the Guinness Book of World Records. This will be a newly recognized record if it is approved.
