Hop flavor is medium-high and will reflect typical American hops with citrusy, floral, resinous, piney and passion fruit aspects. Medium-high hop bitterness is present, although the malt backbone will support the strong hop character and provide for good balance. Medium-dry to dry finish.

Devil’s Peak is a small craft brewery determined to prove to South African drinkers that there’s more to beer than pale lager. The 6 percent IPA is inspired by the American model. It has a deep gold color and has a superb fruit aroma of peaches and mangoes, underscored by toasted malt and peppery hops. Tart hop resins and bittersweet fruit combine in the mouth, underscored by sappy malt. The finish has a massive bitter hop character; the fruit fades but the rich, toasted malt note continues. Full-flavored and memorable.

There is little foam as the honey-colored beer fills the glass. Oh, but there’s plenty of aroma. Citrus, pine needles, tropical fruit and an oddly appealing cattiness are backed by baking bread. The bitterness is steely and sends a mineral tang across the palate as fruity hops play through. It finishes with a wild flourish of hop flavors; bitterness lingers nicely. I first tasted this beer two months ago; this bottle has been in the fridge since then. It seems undiminished. This is a really great IPA. It looks like South African craft beer has arrived – everyone say hello!
