Rhino Chasers Pilsner

All About Beer Magazine - Volume 34, Issue 2
May 1, 2013 By - -

Lost Rhino Brewing Co.

Ashburn, VA

An Americanized version of a Bohemian Pilsner, this crisp golden lager is clean and refreshing. Premium Canadian Pilsner and Munich malts create a sweet backbone, but hops are what really make this brew stand out.

ABV: 5.6

ABW: 4.5

COLOR: 5.7

BITTERNESS: 45

ORIGINAL GRAVITY: 1042

AVAILABLE: VA, DC

A light, sweet, lemon and fresh bread aroma: quite appealing and clean. Not overhopped, this one’s bitter but not crushingly so, and the body’s malty but light enough to be refreshing. The bitterness grabs the finish, so hard it’s actually a bit sticky/resiny, and there’s just a bit of ash/burnt character. It’s good as a stand-alone pint, but it’s aching for food: big meat or richly topped flatbread.
- Lew Bryson
I remember from the long-ago Rhino Chasers contract brewing company that the name relates to surfing in some way, which explains the amusing rhino-surfboard silhouette on the label. In the glass, however, this is a serious lager, bright gold with a spicy-floral and faintly sweet aroma. The body segues nicely from a hint of sweet grain up front to a dry and spicy body with a gradually building bitterness. Perhaps a bit heavy on the palate for a pilsner, but that wouldn’t stop me from reaching for a bottle or three as the sun sets.
- Stephen Beaumont
