Roger Protz, editor of CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide and a regular contributor to this magazine, has undertaken quite a task. From the birth of the style through to its “great revival,” Protz has chronicled the storied history of the India pale ale. The book traces the style’s origins in the early 19th century all the way up through present day’s fruited examples. Those first IPAs bear little resemblance to the style as we know it today, of course, but that—coupled with the author’s historical research—makes its evolution all the more intriguing. In addition to the historical perspective, Protz explains how the style got to where it is today, with short vignettes and tasting notes for classic and modern examples the world over.–Daniel Hartis
