Visitors to London can find one remaining link with the past: the Anchor Tavern at 34 Park Street, Southwark, SE1, on the Thames Path (nearest train and Underground station: London Bridge). This is the former “brewery tap” for Thrale’s and then Barclay Perkins Brewery. The establishment was frequented by such luminaries of the literary and theater scene as Dr. Samuel Johnson, Goldsmith, Burke and David Garrick. It’s a maze of small bars and parlors, with black oak boards and beams, high-back settles and open fires. The cask-conditioned beers are Marston’s Pedigree, Wadworth 6X and, fittingly, Courage Directors.
