“Buccaneer beer” is produced by the acclaimed Van Steenberge brewery in Belgium. It’s deep bronze in color with a touch of amber, and it has a big fluffy head of foam: The beer is aged in bottle. The aroma is spicy, with blood orange notes, candy sugar and nutty malt. The palate offers toasted grain, tart fruit, rich candy sugar and spicy Saaz hops and is followed by a long, bittersweet finish dominated by orange fruit, toasted malt, candy sugar, a hint of caramel and fading hop bitterness.

Freaky pirate marketing; not the typical abbey, devil reference or even eclectic thinking here. Red in the name, but looks amber. Massive fruity aroma, persimmon paste, pineapple, dragon fruit and guava with faint diacetyl. More smooth than crisp, more sweet than bitter. Hints of alcohol meet too much sweetness. Clearly not balanced, and each sip could be considered a chore. We were hoping for something a bit more brash with some “piratitude.”
