Beers to Look For

All About Beer Magazine - Volume 24, Issue 3

It is easy to find excellent examples of some of the beer styles mentioned in these articles: notably American pale ales, India pale ales, or amber lagers and ales. Other styles are not as well known. For every style mentioned, here are some domestic and imported examples to look for. Obviously, the list is not exhaustive, but it should help readers in any part of the country to experiment with these delicious pairings and recipes.

Ale styles

Amber/Red Ale: North Coast Red Seal Ale, Anderson Valley Boont Amber

American Brown Ale: Brooklyn Brown Ale, Smuttynose Old Brown Dog, Goose Island Hex Nut Brown Ale, Pete’s Wicked Ale

British Brown Ales: Samuel Smith’s Nut Brown Ale, Newcastle Brown Ale

Lighter Porters and Stouts: Fuller’s London Porter, Geary’s London Porter, Magic Hat Heart of Darkness, Guinness

Big Porters and Stouts: Anchor Porter, Sierra Nevada Porter and Stout, Sheaf Stout, Deschutes Obsidian Stout

Imperial Stout: Bell’s Expedition Stout, Victory Storm King Stout, Samuel Smith’s Imperial Stout

Bière de Garde: Jenlain, La Choulette, 3 Monts, Castelain

Barleywine: J. W. Lees Harvest Ale, Sierra Nevada Bigfoot, Anchor Old Foghorn

Belgian Dubbel: Chimay Red, Maredsous Dubbel, Corsendonk Abbey Brown Ale, Westmalle Dubbel

Lager styles

Pilsner: Pilsner Urquell. In addition, The most popular domestic beers—Budweiser, Miller, Coors and Pabst—as well as imports including Labatt, Heineken and Tsing Tao, are all descendants of the pilsner style.

Helles: Spaten Lager, Paulaner Premium Lager

Amber/Red Lagers: Killian’s Irish Red, Michael Shea’s Irish Amber

Bock: Samuel Adams Winter Lager, Shiner Bock, Michelob Amber Bock

Doppelbock: Ayinger Celebrator, Augustiner Maximator, Paulaner Salvator, Spaten Optimator, Leinenkugel Doppelbock, Moretti La Rossa

Wheat beers

Belgian-style Witbier: Hoegaarden, Blue Moon, Blanche de Bruxelles, Wieckse Witte, Allagash White

Weissbier: Schneider Weisse, Weihenstephaner, Paulaner Hefe-Weizen, Tabernash Weisse

Specialty styles

Kölsch: Reissdorf Kölsch Flying Dog Tire Biter

Belgian Fruited Lambics: Lindemans Framboise (sweet); Liefmans Kriek, Boon Kriek (dry)

beers made from smoked malt : Schlenkerla Rauchbier, Spezial Rauchbier, Alaskan Smoked Porter, Rogue Smoke
