When I was in college, I had several friends who enjoyed the sugary-liquor concoction known as the Long Island Iced Tea—LIIT for short. I have fuzzy memories of a bartender filling a shaker pint glass up with ice, then grabbing four bottles—two in each hand—and upending them, spilling the contents into the glass for a good, solid five count. Then he’d top it all with a squirt from the soda gun. A quick stir with a straw, and it was down the hatch for my pals.
I still don’t know what was in them, but I know the next afternoon my friends would swear it would never happen again. I largely stuck with beer in those days.
I was reminded of those heady times when Bud Light added a new extension to its line this past week called MIXXTAIL. Unlike other breweries that have tried to enter the cocktail space with just beer—like Miller Fortune—these are actually cocktail-flavored beers, using Bud Light as a base.
The threat facing the bottom line of the country’s larger beer manufacturers is not just the so-called craft segment, but also the number of cross drinkers coming into the marketplace. Rather than just sticking with beer, or wine, or spirits, these drinkers—usually millennials—are mixing their drinks during nights out.
So while some beer companies used to be able to rely on loyalty, they are now seeing a dip in overall sales as drinks jump between categories. There have been big gains, however, in the cider category and the Flavored Malt Beverage (FMB) arena. That’s where Anheuser-Busch (AB) thinks it can gain back some ground.
There are three flavors in the MIXXTAIL collection, and last week in New York with AB representatives I tasted the trio, available in 11.5-oz re-sealable aluminum bottles. For the curious, I treated this as I do other tastings, taking into account, appearance, aroma, flavor, mouthfeel and overall impression. Each was poured into a pint glass and served over ice. Here is my take on the MIXXTAIL flavors, though I make no claim to be schooled in the world of FMBs.
Long Island (malt beverage with natural flavors, caramel color, and artificial sweetener) is 6%, and has an amber shade that is not unlike blended scotch. There is no visible head, and only low-to-moderate carbonation. With aromas of vanilla, cream soda and ginger, it doesn’t taste overly sweet. That is to say it doesn’t coat the teeth in a film in the way some other sugary drinks do. The carbonation adds some life to each sip, and there’s a bit of a snap at the end, similar to fresh ginger, but ultimately it finishes dry.
Hurricane (malt beverage with natural flavors, certified color and artificial sweetener) is 8% and pours from the bottle as an alarming shade of red. Based on the New Orleans famous cocktail of the same name, this is an adult version of Hawaiian Punch or red Kool-Aid. There are candy fruit flavors present: lime, cherry, even a bit of melon. There is some citric acid in the finish that gives it a bit of needed character.
Firewalker (malt beverage with natural flavors and caramel color) is 8% and smells like a Yankee Candle of apple and cinnamon. Today’s drinker of a certain age will tell you that the “it” drink of the moment is Fireball, a cinnamon whiskey, best served in shot form. This is the beer maker’s attempt to re-create that. The aroma is powerful—like a scented candle—and it spreads well beyond the boundary of the glass. It can be detected from the other side of a table, it’s that odorous. The color of filtered, fresh-pressed cider, it smells like a green apple Jolly Rancher candy and has vanilla and sweet cinnamon flavors.
These are clearly not designed for the die-hard beer geeks, or even just the casual lover of ale and lager. The drinks fit a specific category, and with a big advertising campaign being rolled out, expect to see these pop up in coolers at your next big gathering with friends. MIXXTAIL is a bridge between club cocktails and beer not one everyone will cross, but the drinks will likely get some traction … until the next new thing comes along.

Thank you for your fair review of these new products. I look forward to trying at least one of each in the near future.
where can you find the mixx tail in stuart ,Florida?
I’m going to try it this weekend.
The Long Island iced tea is the worst drink I have ever tried how this made it out of the factory is crazy! I almost hurled after the first sip!!
I agree… The LIT made want to vomit. I can’t even give the other 7 bottles away.
Did you try filling a glass half full with the LIIT and then filling the remaining portion with either Pepsi or Coke? I don’t like LIITs by them selves, but when added with Coke or Pepsi… It’s AMAZEBALLS!!!!
hurricane and esp firewalker are adequate. LIT is horrible, i feel similar revulsion. it’s of note that the LIT does NOT sell at the stores I’ve seen it stocked at…
I agree, it’s awful stuff. I have only had this drink twice before, and loved the taste. But! this crap needs to be poured down the drain!
The absolute worst stuff I’ve ever drank. Took one drink and poured the rest out. Don’t waste your money.
And with that, your opinion is irrelevant. One drink? Get out of here light weight.
Stupid name come in marketing team. A 5 year old could come up with a better name.
We called these bitch drinks in my day. Boones farms and Zuma for the ladies to get drunk on.
well I liked the tea. Haven’t tried the others yet. I love the aluminum bottle too. Of course I like the ‘Rita’s from last summer too. So I guess I am one if those FMB enthusiasts you mentioned.
Does it really taste like a long island?
It’s close, but it is good. The firewalker taste like an Angry Orchard beer with a shot of fireball whisky. I enjoy them both. Haven’t tried the hurricane, sounds too sweet. Like the fact that you can put the lid back on & get it cold again and doesn’t go flat like beer does.
Look forward to enjoying your new beer this summer with my famil and friends
Worst drinks I have had in a long time you need to go back to the drawing board waste of money!!!
I like the Hurricane drink. Have only sampled the others but would definitely try them. I like the aluminum bottle and the look of the label. Good job Bud Light.
My wife bought a LI at a concert last night.
Not trying to be snarky, but it tasted like cough syrup and soda.
That’s what I thought too!!
I heard jags fans love this stuff!
the Long Island Iced Tea is disgusting. I wish I would have read the reviews before i bought any of it. Get your act together Bud cuz this stuff is horrible.
I TRYED THE HURRICANE ND MAN I CANT GET RID OF THIS HEADACHE I GOT FROM IT.. I ONLY DRANK 3 ND GOT A LIGHT BUZZ BUT IT HAVE A HANGOVER LIKE I DRANK ALL NIGHT.. ILL JUST STICK TO VODQUILA.. FTB
I got a horrible headache as well after just one. I can drink tequila and vodka and feel great.
Oh god I wish I’d read this prior to killing an 8pk by myself. Was going to try the Firewalker but I think I’ll just go with Straight Fireball or Aftershock first and deal with the burn after a shot verses the headache I got off this! It’s a very tasty, good drink, don’t get me wrong. But make sure you have Excedrine and anti nausea meds by the bed the next morning. I’ve never had a “hangover” if this is one, I’ll let the college kids keep this product. Haha.
First I must admit I am not a beer drinker. I’ve tried many and just couldn’t make it through but firewalker has almost become a part of my evening routine. I can’t speak for the rest of them but the firewalker reminds me of mead. Well done bud light
Sounds digusting I will stick to Guinness
Guiness is the bitch beer that manly man need to drink to feel like they can drink a black beer.
So Niko then what is the black beer that real men drink? Guiness is my regular beer and if that makes me a bitch then I’d like to know what beer you drink that makes you such a bitch beer expert?
I work somewhere where we sell tons of different beers and when these came out, I couldn’t help but ask customers buying it if they had tried it yet,and the ones that had, said hands down ,the Firewalker was nasty, but I finally tried that today and have to agree that it tastes like a green apple Jolly Rancher, with a little cinnamon, but I didn’t think it was too bad, especially at 8%,I’d buy it again.
You wussies! I get wasted on Mixxtails LITs all the time. I poured that shit on crush ice and after four 24oz cans, I’m very happy! 😉
I tried the LIT and it was horrible! I drank the Hurricane and it was wonderful. I would love the try the Firewalker, it sounds good.
Opinions, Opinions,
I tried the LIIT,and I’m addicted. All the stores in my area are FULLY stocked with the other 2 and sold out of the LIIT. They say it’s the best seller. So I tried a hurricane, I didn’t like, it tasted like kool’aid and beer!
I love the LIIT
I’m with you on this. Love the LIIT and it is sold out in all of the stores around here.
I tried both the Hurricane and Firewalker and they are nasty!!!! My man (who can drink just about anything) even tried them and he said they were gross. Do not waste your money!!! No idea if the LIIT is good or not, it was sold out when we ventured to the store to purchase these.
Bad…I’d drink toliet water first.
WORST hangover of my LIFE! Drank 4 Hurricanes and didn’t get out of the bed the next day!!! Honestly NEVER have I had a worse hangover!! YUCK!!!!!!
Yea, I think the whole mixing of alcohols is the key to the “hangover” but I agree. Hurricane had me dying the next day. I’ll stick with just beer or liquor. No more mixies.
tried the LIIT….not desperate enough to drink them & cant give the other 7 bottles away either…firewalker probably not my thing so havent tried it yet but absolutely love the Hurricane!! Sold out in Chicagoland area cant find them anywere!! Please keep them coming!! Finally found something I love!
I’m not a beer drinker…however I was offered something a little different…gave it a try and I’ve found the only non-beer beer I absolutely love HURRICANE!! Thx
LIIT is a bloody well wicked good drink! I can’t imagine how it’s so unpopular with so many others and tend to think they’re full of shit.
Fire walker…. My new favorite fall and winter drink. Delicious!
I don’t know what they put in it….but, after one drink I get a raging headache. I’ll stick to grey goose.
love this liit
The hurricane headache may be from the artificial sweetener used. Aspertame sweetener is known for migraines. I can not find out what sweeteners are used in Hurricane but will not consider it anymore until I know for sure sweetener is not aspertame. Not crazy about taste anyway.
I enjoyed the LIT can’t find them anymore was a good product in my opinion kept a few packs @home shame they aren’t available nowhere ☹️
I agree. Loved the crisp bite of the LIT but can no longer find them. Please bring them back.
I love the long Island iced tea but now I can’t buy it locally by the case only 24 0unce can. So bummed.
I loved the Hurricane. I am so bummed that I can’t find them anywhere. PLEASS BRING THEM BACK!!! I’m in Redondo Beach, Ca. If you know where I can find them locally still please let me know. Thank you.
Hurricane is unbelievably horrible. Waaayyyy too much sugar that it made my stomach hurt with half the can. The Long island ice tea is good, and didn’t have a ton of sugar. Firewalker was right in the middle of both, but still good and didn’t have a ton of sugar to make my stomach hurt. Void hurricane at all cost, very very horrible.
Have discontinued the Long Island Ice Tea?
Good GOD this “Long Island” flavor is horrible! The taste is not even remotely anything like an actual LIIT mixed drink. This is beer-heavy flavor with way too much fructose sweetner. The only possible connection it could have to a LIIT is that it is bottled within 1000 miles of Long Island.
Also, some of these reviews are clearly shills. “Looking forward to trying your new beverage with my friends and family”. Who writes like that? Shills, that’s who.
Look, this stuff taste like beer mixed with cough drops. I’m sure some people buying this are 21 and don’t know any better or are hopeless alcoholics and will drink anything.
As for the rest of us, we *might* use this stuff to remove graffiti stains from walls, and that’s about it.
