INDIANAPOLIS—Over the weekend Sun King hosted the inaugural CANvitational, showcasing some of the best canned craft beer from across America. However, the event was more than just a beer festival, it was a chance for Sun King to give back to the community and opportunity to highlight and support high-impact arts projects through the in the community. To find those projects, Sun King chose power2give, an initiative of the Arts Council of Indianapolis, as the resource to discover organizations with particularly special projects that needed and deserved support.

As an ongoing supporter of the work of the Arts Council of Indianapolis, Sun King is proud to partner with the power2give initiative to create meaningful community impact and support for the arts in Indianapolis. Five organizations were selected to participate in the project funding opportunity; Dance Kaleidoscope, Indiana Writers Center, New World Youth Orchestras, Spotlight Players, and VSA Indiana. All attended the CANvitational and showcased their projects in an effort to garner votes from the crowds.

By popular vote, VSA Indiana took first place and will receive $5000 to fund their projectsupporting a year-round series of free, public programs held in VSA Indiana’s adaptive studios, located in the Harrison Center for the Arts. VSA Indiana’s mission is to provide access to lifelong learning and creative expression through the arts of people with disabilities in Indiana and each First Friday guests can sample a new workshop led by a professional VSA artist. The line-up features inclusive workshops in ceramics, 2-D art, music, drama/movement, and more!

VSA Indiana (formerly Very Special Art) has been serving Hoosiers for over 30 years.

INDIANAPOLIS—On Saturday, July 13, the Brewers of Indiana Guild in conjunction with the Indiana State Fair hosted the 13th annual Indiana Brewers Cup. Professional and home brewers alike from all over Indiana and across the country submitted 1,400 beers to the competition. 60+ BJCP (Beer Judge Certification Program) judges from throughout the Midwest put in an exhausting effort to judge beers in 23 separate categories and award Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals to the winners.
Sun King Brewing Co. earned the title of Champion Brewery, more commonly referred to as Indiana Brewery of the Year, after receiving the most points of the 31 professional breweries entered in the 23 different categories of beer, which included four first-place beers. Gold medals were awarded for Wee Mac Scottish Ale, Velvet Fog, Stupid Sexy Flanders, and Maibock. A Silver medal was awarded for Sunlight Cream Ale and two Bronze medals were awarded for Osiris Pale Ale and Popcorn Pilsner.
“We’re honored to have earned this award, said Dave Colt, Sun King owner and head brewer. “We work hard to make great beer and it’s always nice when a qualified panel of judges recognizes your efforts.”
More than 80 judges from all over the country tasted and rated the beers over two days.  Silver and bronze medals were also awarded in each of the categories, which range from American Ales to Spice/Herb/Vegetable beer.  All the winning beers will be on display in the DuPont Food Pavilion during the Indiana State Fair, Aug. 2 – 18. Sun King Brewing Co. Grapefruit Jungle https://allaboutbeer.net/daily-pint/beer-of-the-week/2011/09/sun-king-brewing-co-grapefruit-jungle/ https://allaboutbeer.net/daily-pint/beer-of-the-week/2011/09/sun-king-brewing-co-grapefruit-jungle/#comments Fri, 30 Sep 2011 18:47:34 +0000 Greg Barbera https://allaboutbeer.net/?p=22453 It’s always a good day when a package shows up on my desk from Sun King Brewing Co. Especially when it is a Friday and the day the beer is being release. Huzzah! Grapefruit Jungle pours amber with a thick white head (from a 16 oz tallboy can cuz we’re talking Sun King). As the head quickly dissipates, huge citrusy notes rush into your nostrils. Mouthfeel is of the resinous and squeaky teeth variety with a dry, crisp finish and a liquid Claritin-coated crostini fade. Plenty for hopheads to enjoy here but not so aggressive as to disappoint pale ale fans.

Sun King Brewing Announces Release Of Oktoberfest https://allaboutbeer.net/daily-pint/new-on-the-shelves/2011/08/sun-king-brewing-announces-release-of-oktoberfest/ https://allaboutbeer.net/daily-pint/new-on-the-shelves/2011/08/sun-king-brewing-announces-release-of-oktoberfest/#comments Thu, 25 Aug 2011 16:11:29 +0000 Greg Barbera https://allaboutbeer.net/?p=22249 Fall is nearly here and Sun King Brewing is celebrating the coming season with the release of Oktoberfest, our take on the classic German lager. Oktoberfest will be tapped on Thurs., Sept. 1 and the tapping will be accompanied by live music from Alpine Express and food from King David’s Dogs. The tapping ends at 9 p.m. but the party will extend well into Sept. as Oktoberfest is the first seasonal beer to be canned by Sun King Brewing Co. During the second week of Sept., cases will be delivered to select Indianapolis-area liquor stores as well as the coolers in Sun King’s Tasting Room. Sun King will publicize these locations via the company’s official Facebook and Twitter profiles.

Sun King’s Oktoberfest has a clean malty start with a slightly spicy hop note and a crisp, dry finish.

Sun King Brewing Co. Releases Johan the Barleywine https://allaboutbeer.net/daily-pint/new-on-the-shelves/2011/06/sun-king-brewing-co-releases-johan-the-barleywine/ https://allaboutbeer.net/daily-pint/new-on-the-shelves/2011/06/sun-king-brewing-co-releases-johan-the-barleywine/#comments Mon, 27 Jun 2011 13:06:47 +0000 Greg Barbera https://allaboutbeer.net/?p=21448 Sun King Brewing Co.‘s first beer becomes its first canned specialty beer. Sun King pioneered the customizable can, which will be the small package delivery system for the brewery’s seasonal, specialty, and barrel-aged beers. Johan the Barleywine has been aged for two years. Sun King is releasing 700 16-ounce cans of Johan the Barleywine – once it’s gone, this recipe will never be made again.

Named in honor of a dearly departed friend who was instrumental in both Dave and Clay’s brewing careers, Johan the Barleywine was the first beer ever brewed at Sun King Brewing Co. in July of 2009. The beer was cellared immediately; half of it was released on tap for the brewery’s first anniversary in July 2010 and half of it is being released in cans for the brewery’s second anniversary on July 1, 2011. Sun King Brewing Co. pioneered the customizable can in early 2011 and Johan is the first barleywine ever to be released in cans. This particular recipe will never be made again.

Barley wine is a strong style ale. At 10% ABV and 60 IBU, Johan delivers a huge malt punch balanced with Pacific Northwest hops. This portion of the one-off batch has been cellared for two years; the flavors are integrated and the subtler aspects of the beer come through in ways they didn’t on the day it left the fermenter.

Sun King is releasing 700 16-ounce cans of this very special beer on Fri., July 1 and we have created a free online ticket that gives the ticketholder the right to purchase up to two (2) cans of Johan the Barleywine. Once a customer claims his or her ticket, he or she can come to the brewery anytime between July 1 and July 28 during regular business hours to purchase your allotment. Johan the Barleywine will sell for $15 per can and reserve tickets are available now. We will not ship cans of Johan the Barleywine – all purchases must be made in person. If reserved cans are not purchased by July 28 they will be made available for purchase in the Tasting Room.

The beer in the can is special but the can itself is special as well. Early in 2011 Sun King pioneered the customizable can, allowing craft brewers to legally can and distribute small batches of seasonal and specialty beers. Johan the Barleywine is the first beer to grace the inside of the specialty can but it it will soon be joined by other limited release Sun King beers.

Again, if customers wish to reserve the right to purchase up to two (2) cans of Johan the Barleywine, please go here immediately and claim your tickets. This can release is likely to sell out quickly so please don’t delay. If you miss your chance to reserve cans ahead of time, we will have a second allotment of 350 cans available for purchase on a first come, first served basis starting on Fri., July 1.

Cans can be reserved here - https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/184493.
