(Press Release)

ESCONDIDO, CA—Suede evokes a sense of smooth, sexy coolness and, for some, perhaps the ‘70s. But when used to describe the latest Stone Brewing Co. collaboration, 10 Barrel/Bluejacket/Stone Suede Imperial Porter, it’s just groovy. The beer was created in collaboration with Tonya Cornett of Bend, Oregon’s 10 Barrel Brewing Co. and Megan O’Leary Parisi of Bluejacket in Washington, D.C. Starting today, the imperial porter will be available in bottles and on draft at select retailers, restaurants and bars across the U.S.

The trio of brewers met each other in typical fashion (at beer events, obviously) and began conversations that eventually led to invites from Stone Brewmaster Mitch Steele to Cornett and O’Leary Parisi to come out and brew. From there, recipe formulation began. The trio envisioned using ingredients indigenous to Southern California, which was accomplished by including avocado honey, dried jasmine, and calendula flowers plucked from the fertile grounds at Stone’s North County San Diego farmstead, Stone Farms.

The result is a luscious, smooth and flavorful beer that incorporates the deep cocoa and coffee notes of an imperial porter with a delicate but discernible bouquet of herbs and floral sweetness. “I have always enjoyed the subtleties of ingredients – botanicals, spices, sugars and other things like that, which can enhance the flavors of a base beer,” said O’Leary Parisi. “There is a certain joy to finding that balance of making your additional ingredients perfectly complementary and not overwhelming.”

At 9.6 percent alcohol by volume (ABV), the beer is ready to enjoy now, or may be properly cellared for months or years. Over time, the jasmine and calendula flowers will take a back seat to rich java and chocolate aromas and flavors. Whether enjoyed now or in the future, this beer is a brilliant example of the spectacular things that can happen when masterful brewing minds converge.

Tasting notes, provided by Stone Brewmaster Mitch Steele

Appearance: Pours deep brown with a rich tan head.
Aroma: Immediately floral, with notes of cocoa and coffee. As the beer warms, the honey aromas become more pronounced.
Taste: Jasmine and honey hit the palate first, followed by the traditional cocoa and coffee flavors that are expected in an imperial porter. The floral character is balanced by a moderate level of fruitiness.
Palate: The beer is incredibly smooth and luscious. “Suede” is the perfect name!
Overall: This was such a fun collaboration. Megan first brought forth the idea of an imperial porter, which we all immediately agreed to, and Tonya provided the malt bill. From there, we decided to add some ingredients from Southern California. The avocado honey provided a very rich, intensely floral flavor. The addition of the honey and jasmine reminds me of Southern California summers, while the calendula flowers hail from Stone Farms and bring a nice floral note and hint of bitterness. I’m very pleased at how well these flavors came through in the finished beer.

ESCONDIDO, CA—It’s every craft beer lover’s dilemma: What beer should I pick when at the grocery store or bottle shop? With an incredible array of tasty craft beers to choose from these days, the answer isn’t always easy. To aid in every beer enthusiast’s decision-making process, Stone Brewing Co. is introducing a variety pack dubbed the Stone Mixed 12 Pack. The Pack may currently be found at select retailers and bottle shops in California. The Stone Mixed 12 Pack features three 12-ounce bottles of four beloved Stone year-round releases: Stone IPAStone Levitation AleStone Ruination IPA and OAKED Arrogant Bastard Ale.

The Stone Mixed 12 Pack is ideal for the craft beer fan who wants (and rightfully deserves) more than just one of the many flavor experiences that Stone has to offer. Whether it’s a beer they can’t live without or one that perhaps they haven’t tried before, the Stone Mixed 12 Pack offers what beer enthusiasts love today: choice. It’s also a great option when faced with entertaining guests with varying palates and desires, making the act of choosing sometimes difficult.

“We hope this new Stone Mixed 12 Pack allows our fans to enjoy their Stone favorites or revisit a beer they haven’t had in a while. It also introduces new fans to the big, bold and hoppy beers Stone is known for,” said Stone CEO and Co-founder Greg Koch. “Sometimes you are in the mood for something overly aggressive and hoppy, other times you might be looking for something that isn’t quite as intense to help you wind down after a long day.”

The Stone Mixed 12 Pack will be available more widely across America beginning in 2014. Occasionally, Stone will mix up – yes, pun intended – the beers included in the Stone Mixed 12 Pack so fans always have a new variety to look forward to.

Magazine’s List https://allaboutbeer.net/daily-pint/whats-brewing/2013/10/stone-brewing-co-makes-inc-magazines-list/ https://allaboutbeer.net/daily-pint/whats-brewing/2013/10/stone-brewing-co-makes-inc-magazines-list/#comments Wed, 02 Oct 2013 18:41:17 +0000 Staff https://allaboutbeer.net/?p=31513 (Press Release)

ESCONDIDO, CA—San Diego-based Stone Brewing Co. has nabbed another prestigious distinction. The 10th largest craft brewing company in the U.S. was recently named one of Inc. Magazine’s “5000 Fastest-Growing Private Companies.” That alone is great news, but even more impressive is that Stone is one of a very select group that has made the publication’s list seven years in a row. In fact, this is the second recognition of substantial growth the company has received this year. In July, Stone was recognized by the San Diego Business Journal as one of the city’s “100 Fastest-Growing Private Companies” for the 10th year in a row. Stone is the only company to have ever achieved this distinction.

“It’s an honor to receive national recognition for our efforts over the years,” said Stone CEO & Co-founder Greg Koch. “Our growth has progressed due to our fans’ desire for better tasting, quality craft beer that they can trust. In order to address demand, we’ve added brewing capacity with the new Stone Packaging Hall, opened the 750-seat Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens – Liberty Station, and launched a Stone Brewing Co. outlet in Terminal 2 of the San Diego International Airport – and that’s just our expansion this year! We’ve accomplished this all despite never discounting, compromising our standards or needing to advertise our beer. Thanks to Inc. for recognizing our efforts; we look forward to making the list again next year.”

According to Inc., to be considered for the list, a company must:

  • Have generated revenue by March 31, 2009
  • Have generated at least $100,000 in revenue in 2009
  • Have generated at least $2 million in revenue in 2012
  • Be privately held, for profit, and based in the U.S. and independent (not a subsidiary or division of another company)

Stone anticipates beer production to increase to 210,000 barrels in 2013, a 20 percent increase over 2012. The company has already hired more than 185 employees this year alone and provided employment opportunities for more than 250 people at the newly opened Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens – Liberty Station, as well as nearly 30 people at the recently opened Stone Brewing Co. in Terminal 2 of San Diego International AirportCurrently, Stone has 81 positions available in brewing, administration, restaurant employment, management, sales, transportation and warehousing in Southern California and the U.S.Interested applicants may visit www.stonebrewing.com/jobs/ for more information.

Significant milestones reached in 2013 thus far by the craft brewing company include:

  • In May, Stone opened the 55,000-square-foot farm-to-table brewery restaurant, Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens – Liberty Station, in San Diego’s Point Loma neighborhood.
  • Stone Farms, the company’s organic-methods farm in Escondido, CA, opened to the public in May for beer, merchandise and produce sales.
  • Stone Packaging Hall, located directly next to the brewery in Escondido, CA opened in early July. The new facility houses the bottling and kegging operations, as well as offices.
  • Stone recently opened a dining venue in the revamped Terminal 2 section of the San Diego International Airport, serving its signature world-inspired creative cuisine and big, bold and hoppy beers.

SAN DIEGO—Stone Brewing Co. is giving San Diego International Airport passengers a reason to actually enjoy going through security. The San Diego craft brewing company is pleased to announce that its bar and restaurant in the newly revamped Terminal 2 is open and greeting passengers from all around the world with artfully created craft beers. Enjoying a locally brewed beer before departing the world-famous San Diego craft brewing region adds new depth and meaning to the old adage, “Parting is such sweet sorrow” or gives rise to the new, apropos phrase, “Parting is bitter awesomeness.”

“I applaud the San Diego International Airport for supporting local businesses, and appreciate the opportunity for Stone to be included in the new terminal,” said Stone Brewing Co. CEO and Co-founder Greg Koch. “We look forward to providing travelers the opportunity to experience what the San Diego craft beer scene has to offer.”

The 2,500-square-foot bistro and bar seats 120 guests, and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner every day from 6am to 10pm. Ten Stone beers, including year-round and special releases, as well as two guest taps, are served from the 12-tap bar. For those wishing to enjoy a bottle on location or take it with them to their final destination, six bottled San Diego craft beer options are available for purchase. Stone’s signature motif has been recreated to include a granite bar top, repurposed vintage wood and a rust-patinaed rebar railing on the venue’s perimeter.

Similar to the company’s two farm-to-table restaurants, Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens – Escondido and the near-to-the-airport Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens – Liberty Station, Stone Brewing Co. in Terminal 2 offers a menu built around the company’s well-known ethos of focusing heavily on locally grown, organic produce from farms around Southern California, including the company’s own Escondido-based Stone Farms. Signature menu items (which pair well with a carefully selected craft beer any time of day) include Brioche French Toast, Stone Levitation Ale BBQ Duck Tacos, Bruschetta BLT Sandwich and Stone Farms Garden Salad. A few kid-friendly menu items are also available for order; after all, half-pints deserve the best the airport has to offer as well.

“Our new venue at the airport could not be more ideal; its prime location makes it the perfect spot to enjoy a delicious Stone beer,” said Stone Director of Hospitality Steve Robbins. “We are ecstatic about the opening and look forward to serving many hungry and thirsty travelers.”

Stone Brewing Co. CEO and co-founder Greg Koch.

On November 1, Stone Brewing Co. CEO & Co-founder Greg Koch will participate in Movember’s “Shave the Date” by completely shaving his long, scraggly beard down to bare skin at a live, orchestrated event in San Diego. Or will he? Koch’s personal goal is to raise $25,000 through the “SHAVE GREG” campaign, though an absolute rock-bottom amount of $15,000 is required to make it happen. “No dough, me no Mo Bro,” grunted Koch gruffly in a manner suiting his current, uh, “look.” Donations are now being accepted through Koch’s fundraising page.

Movember is a global men’s health charity encouraging men to grow and women to support the Mo (moustache) for 30 days in November. Through the power of the moustache, awareness and vital funds are raised in support of men’s health issues, specifically prostate and testicular cancer initiatives. Koch has been nominated as a Mo Bro spokesperson for the movement to help spread the gospel (as he’s known to do) about Movember and its campaign.

“Twice in my life, I’ve shaved a goatee leaving a moustache, and both times I removed it the same day because it freaked me out when I looked in the mirror. I can’t imagine having one for a month,” said Koch. “My current beard is stately and reminiscent of our founding fathers. Yet if I raise enough money, I’m trading that stately look for a moustache that’ll probably be reminiscent of a bad 70s album cover. Sometimes I amaze even myself at the lengths I’ll go to, or cut, for charitable causes. Now that’s self-sacrifice on behalf of others! So, I’m calling for your support. Donate not for me, but for the cause. I’m just your humble servant.”

Shave The Date: Movember 1 is a day to shave down and get excited about the hirsute month ahead. This year, to celebrate the coming of Movember, hundreds of San Diegans will gather together at Quality Social in the San Diego Gaslamp District for an event that will bare it all. With Koch’s shave-down taking center stage, San Diegans wishing to participate will have the opportunity to register and have their own faces shaved clean, courtesy of Floyd’s Barber Shop, who will be onsite to professionally shave attendees free of charge. The Shave the Date event is free to attend, and all ages are welcome.

Style: IPA

ABV: 8.4%

Review: Golden orange in color, this beer is very hazy. It has great head retention, a beautiful cream color.  This beer tastes slightly more like an ESB than an IPA with its very bitter taste.  A very earthy and herbal taste, with an extremely dry finish.

Stone Releases 17th Anniversary Götterdämmerung IPA https://allaboutbeer.net/daily-pint/whats-brewing/2013/08/stone-releases-17th-anniversary-gotterdammerung-ipa/ https://allaboutbeer.net/daily-pint/whats-brewing/2013/08/stone-releases-17th-anniversary-gotterdammerung-ipa/#comments Mon, 12 Aug 2013 19:07:29 +0000 Staff https://allaboutbeer.net/?p=30694 (Press Release)

ESCONDIDO, CA—At Stone Brewing Co., new beer ideas from way-out-there to downright obscure are debated daily. When it comes to brewing a beer in celebration of Stone’s anniversary, it’s no-holds-barred for the brewing team. Case in point: Stone 17th Anniversary Götterdämmerung IPA. Gott-er-dam-er, what?! (The phonetic spelling doesn’t help much on the pronunciation; check out Brewmaster Mitch Steele attempting to pronounce it by watching the video.) Starting today, the anniversary beer will be available in bottles and/or on draft at select retailers, restaurants and bars across the U.S.

Stone 17th Anniversary Götterdämmerung IPA is a double IPA, brewed with malts and hops traditionally used in German pilsners. Steele has always been a fan of German beers, and proposed a West Coast-style double/triple IPA with German hop and malt characteristics for this year’s Stone Anniversary Ale. A departure from the citrusy American and fruity New Zealand hops the team primarily brewed with of late, the German hop varieties bring intensely hoppy character and floral, stone fruit, herbal, spicy, peppery flavors to the beer. Stone 17th Anniversary Götterdämmerung IPA is 9.5 percent alcohol-by-volume (ABV) and comes in at 102 international bittering units (IBUs). The beer pours a deep gold, and has a uniquely strong flavor profile that is balanced, clean and intensely bitter. It should be consumed before the “Enjoy By” date on the bottle to maximize hop aromas and flavors, as it’s quite hard to say how this will cellar if laid down for future consumption.

So, what does Götterdämmerung mean? Occasionally referred to as a disastrous conclusion of events, the name was chosen because Stone wanted to take West Coast IPA sensibilities and combine them with German ingredients. By unceremoniously mashing together one of the most traditional beer styles with one of the newest, Stone created a beer that well, may be the end (or perhaps the extension) of everything we thought we knew when it came to the range of uses for German hop varieties.

Of course, no anniversary is complete without a stupendous display of celebration. On August 16 and 17, Stone will infiltrate the California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) campus in North County San Diego to bring fans an epic array of craft beers, all in the name of celebration and charity. One hundred percent of the profits from the Stone 17th Anniversary Celebration & Invitational Beer Festival will be donated to local charities, including Boys & Girls Club of San MarcosFight ALDPalomar Family YMCA and Surfrider Foundation. Tasting notes, provided by Stone Brewmaster Mitch Steele
Appearance: Pours deep gold and brilliantly crystal clear with an off-white colored head.
Aroma: Focused on hoppy, with herbal and stone fruit hop aromatics.
Taste: European hops—herbal, floral, spicy, peppery and resiny, balanced by very clean, intensely bitter, beautiful subtle malt flavors, and just a hint of alcohol.
Palate: Crisp and bitter. A very refreshing beer; well suited for the summer!
Overall: A very fun beer for us to brew. Through a series of intense dry-hopping trials that we have been running over the past couple of years, we found several newer German hop varieties that we thought were unique and different from the citrusy American hops and fruity New Zealand hops that we have been using so much of this year. An interesting twist on a Double IPA (a German IPA, perhaps?), brewed with malts and hops traditionally used to brew German lagers and European pilsners. Some of the hops we included in this recipe include Strisselspalt, which has long been one of my favorite noble hops, with a delicate floral character and hints of citrus; Sterling, a U.S.-bred hop with Saaz heritage, and a hop we haven’t used much before, but we just love the intense resiny and spicy pure hop flavor; Herkules, a newer high-alpha German hop variety with intense stone fruit and tropical fruit characteristics; and Hersbrucker, a classic German aroma hop with intense floral and stone fruit flavors.

Suggested food pairings, provided by “Dr.” Bill Sysak

ESCONDIDO, CA—Oh happy (hoppy?) day! Preparations for the Stone 17th Anniversary Celebration & Invitational Beer Festival are underway, and this year’s event figures to be the biggest and best yet. On August 16 and 17, Stone Brewing Co. will set up shop at the California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) campus in North County San Diego to bring fans an epic array of craft beers, all in the name of celebration and charity. One hundred percent of the profits from the festival will be donated to local charities, including Boys & Girls Club of San Marcos, Fight ALD, Palomar Family YMCA, and Surfrider Foundation.

Seventeen years ago, Steve Wagner and Greg Koch opened Stone Brewing Co. and sold the very first keg of Stone Pale Ale. Stone has since grown from a small operation producing 400 barrels of craft beer during its first five months of operation to the 10th largest craft brewery in the U.S. with a projected 210,000 barrels of production this year. Although the company has grown significantly throughout the years, brewing and promoting craft beer has always remained at the forefront of the company’s focus. Also a core value of Stone’s culture is giving back to the community.

“Each year we’ve raised a glass to celebrate our accomplishments, but more importantly, in total, our Anniversary Celebration & Invitational Beer Festivals have raised more than $1.5 million for local charities,” said Koch. “We hope you join us for a great time and help us contribute to worthy organizations that support our community. You may officially consider enjoying beer with friends a selfless act!”

The two-day event begins Friday, August 16 with a Brewers Reception held on the grounds of CSUSM. The $75 ticket price includes a commemorative glass, tastings of special beers that will only be available that night, mingling with world-class craft brewers, complimentary gourmet fare from Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens and other local vendors, live music, and an upper-level cigar lounge.

The Stone 17th Anniversary Celebration & Invitational Beer Festival will also be held at CSUSM. Tickets are $40 per person, with two sessions available – Session A will take place from 11am – 2pm and Session B from 3 – 6pm. The festival will feature more than 50 breweries and 100 beers, as well as complimentary homebrewed sodas, samples of the famous Mike’s Beer Cheese and special Stone beers on cask. Ticket holders will receive a commemorative tasting glass with 15 three-ounce samples.

R&R Coconut IPA from Stone Brewing Co. was brewed with three pounds of lightly toasted coconut per barrel.

(Press Release)
ESCONDIDO, CA—Today, Stone Brewing Co. released Robert Masterson & Ryan Reschan / Rip Current / Stone R&R Coconut IPA. A tropically inspired ale brewed in collaboration with San Diego homebrewers and Society of Barley Engineers duo, Robert Masterson and Ryan Reschan, as well as San Marcos, CA-based Rip Current Brewing Company.

Earlier this year, Masterson and Reschan’s homebrewed Coconut IPA was entered into Stone’s 2013 Homebrew Competition & AHA Rally at Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens – Escondido. Thirty participants entered the competition with hopes of winning the opportunity to have their recipe professionally brewed at Stone and distributed across the US. After attendees submitted votes to narrow the field, an esteemed judging panel, consisting of Stone CEO & Co-founder Greg Koch, President & Co-founder Steve Wagner, Brewmaster Mitch Steele, Craft Beer Ambassador “Dr.” Bill Sysak and several Stone brewers, selected Masterson and Reschan’s beer. Why? Because, it was very creative and amazingly tasty!

Expect a strong coconut aroma and distinct coconut flavor from the beer. Three pounds of lightly toasted coconut per barrel was added to the whirlpool and post dry hop – 280 pounds total. To achieve the final glorious result, collaborators Paul Sangster and Guy Shobe of Rip Current Brewing Company offered alternatively creative hopping suggestions and their pilot system to experiment on. The team was able to brew test batches utilizing proposed hop combinations and finally dialed in a combination that met the satisfaction of all five collaborators. Ultimately, six hop varieties were used to attain the bright flavors of tropical fruit that the homebrew version originally delivered. Overall, Robert Masterson & Ryan Reschan / Rip Current / Stone R&R Coconut IPA is the perfect beer to enjoy in the summer sun, providing a refreshing balance of coconut and tropical fruit with a smooth, dry, hoppy, bitter finish. The beer should be enjoyed before the, well, “Enjoy By” date on the bottle to maximize the coconut and hop aromas and flavors.

ESCONDIDO, CA—Stone Brewing Co. is pleased to announce that, beginning August 20, the San Diego, CA brewing company’s beers will be available in bars, restaurants and retail outlets in Nebraska for the first time. Known for its bold, flavorful and hop-centric ales, Stone will distribute its beers throughout The Cornhusker State via four area distributors: Double Eagle Beverage, Eagle Beverage, H & H Distributing and Quality Brands of Omaha. Stone Brewing Co. Craft Beer Ambassador “Dr.” Bill Sysak and the regional Stone sales team will host a slew of events to celebrate from August 20 through 24.

“Nebraska has long been a state that has expressed interest in having our beers available in their local establishments,” said Stone Director of National Sales Jason Armstrong. “Our Nebraska fans have been very active on social media and telling us at beer festivals how much they want Stone beer in their state. It’s exciting to add Nebraska to our Stone family and contribute to the growing craft beer scene there.”

Each distributor will distribute Stone beers to bars, retailers and restaurants in their headquarter-based cities: Lincoln, Fremont, Grand Island and Omaha.
