FORT COLLINS, CO—New Belgium Brewing today announced that Tour de Fat, the traveling tour of philanthropic bicycle advocacy, raised $535,924 for local nonprofits this season, totaling more than $3 million in its 14-year stretch. This year’s total is up almost $40,000 from last year. The event is free, yet all proceeds from beer and merchandise sales and donations from parade participants go to nonprofit organizations focused on making communities a better place to ride a bike.
Tour de Fat celebrates the fun side of bicycle culture, kicking off each festival with a costumed bike parade through city streets. Upon the parade’s completion, thousands of friends rock the park all day with eclectic entertainment, New Belgium beer, bike-themed activities, delicious local food and so much more. The events also encouraged people to think twice about recycling, with an impressive 85 percent of waste diverted from landfills.

Tour de Fat traveled to 12 cities between May and October, attracting a total of 97,500 beer and bike enthusiasts and 57,359 bike parade participants (up 23,100 attendees and 8,096 riders from 2012). New Belgium’s hometown of Fort Collins, Colo. raised the most money ($90,000), and had the most festival-goers and parade riders, both totaling 25,000 people. To see how each city performed, a breakdown is included below.

Tour de Fat also hosted the seventh annual car-for-bike swap, where one brave role model in each city stepped on stage to trade in car keys and pledge to live car-free for one year. Each swapper received a $2,250 stipend to buy their own commuter bike in exchange for their car. Vehicles for Charity auctioned the swapped cars, with proceeds benefitting Tour De Fat’s local nonprofit partners. Each of the swappers is encouraged to blog about their adventures as a two-wheeled local rock star. To read their tales from the road, visit the car-for-bike trade blog at http://trademycarforabike.tumblr.com/.

“Each year just gets better as Tour de Fat extends its reach into communities to share bike love in the most colorful way possible,” said Matt Kowal, Tour De Fat Impresario. “It’s where you can find flamboyant costumes and entire families dancing in the park; it’s the look of communities raising money together alongside funky musicians and mind-blowing magicians.”

“We thank everyone who takes the time to make this kind of magic happen,” added Kowal. “It just feels good!”

CHICAGO—Denver-based brewery, SandLot, received incredible recognition at this year’s Great American Beer Festival, winning “Large Brewing Company of the Year.” Blue Moon Brewing Company’s SandLot Brewery is part of Tenth and Blake, the craft and import division of MillerCoors.

Opening its doors in the right field corner of Coors Field in 1995 in Denver, Blue Moon Brewing Company’s SandLot has been at the forefront of brewing cutting-edge beers. The brewery continues to experiment with unique ingredients to develop bolder beer flavors for the constantly evolving taste-preference of today’s beer drinker. Nationally recognized for its Blue Moon Belgian White, a beer first brewed and served at the SandLot, the brewery opened its doors for the first time this year to guests on non-game days.

“This is a truly amazing honor to be acknowledged amongst our fellow brewers, by beer judges from across the country and around the world,” said John Legnard, SandLot brewmaster. “We couldn’t be more humbled to receive such a prestigious reward for the work we are so passionate about.”

In addition to winning “Large Brewing Company of the Year,” SandLot’s “Move Back” was awarded a gold medal in the Dortmunder or German-Style Oktoberfest category, “Second Hand Smoke” won a gold medal in the Smoke Beer category and “Goat Rancher” won a bronze medal in the Bock category.

To add to the celebration, MillerCoors received five additional medals at this year’s festival, which featured nearly 5,000 judged beers.

“We are thrilled to celebrate and toast the SandLot team on their incredible achievement,” said David Ryder, head brewmaster at MillerCoors. “This year has proven more than ever that MillerCoors continues to deliver the best and most diverse portfolio in the American beer industry.”

Left Hand Wins Three Gold Medals at GABF https://allaboutbeer.net/daily-pint/whats-brewing/2013/10/left-hand-wins-three-gold-medals-at-gabf/ https://allaboutbeer.net/daily-pint/whats-brewing/2013/10/left-hand-wins-three-gold-medals-at-gabf/#comments Mon, 14 Oct 2013 20:41:22 +0000 Staff https://allaboutbeer.net/?p=31622 (Press Release)

LONGMONT, CO—Four weeks ago, 3 inches was all that remained between a flood disaster and a dodged bullet for Left Hand Brewing Company. On Saturday morning, the number 3 proved its good luck again for the brewery – this time with 3 Gold Medals for Sawtooth Ale, Milk Stout, and Fade to Black Volume 1 – Foreign Export Stout at this year’s Great American Beer Festival (GABF) in Denver, CO. The brewery tied for the most Gold Medals taken home this year.

Back in September, the Longmont, CO brewery came close to destruction as the mighty St. Vrain River raged to epic levels during the 500 year flood. After plenty of hard work and cleanup, the brewery was back on its feet and fundraising over $60K for CO Flood Relief.  It was a tough month, and as VP of Operations Chris Lennert quipped “this wasn’t just another GABF for us – we needed to cut loose collectively, celebrate 20 years of making great beer, thank all of our customers for their support during the flood and tell the world we’re stronger than ever.” And did we ever – on the opening night of the Great American Beer Festival, Left Hand introduced two new Nitro beers in 12oz bottles – Sawtooth Nitro & Wake Up Dead Nitro – to an audience of over 1,500 friends and industry guests at the brewery’s 20th Anniversary party.

Two days later, Left Hand won the most medals in its 20th year since its first GABF in 1994. Sawtooth Ale, the brewery’s original flagship and still going strong, took Gold (just like ’94) for Ordinary / Special Bitter. Left Hand’s best seller, Milk Stout took Gold for Sweet Stout. Finally, in the first year Left Hand has brought back Fade to Black Volume 1 since its 2010 Gold win for Export Stout, FTB 1 took another Gold medal home Saturday for the same category. The latest hardware additions bring Left Hand’s GABF medal count to 22.

Iconic Utah Beers Arrive in Colorado https://allaboutbeer.net/daily-pint/whats-brewing/2013/10/iconic-utah-beers-arrive-in-colorado/ https://allaboutbeer.net/daily-pint/whats-brewing/2013/10/iconic-utah-beers-arrive-in-colorado/#comments Wed, 02 Oct 2013 22:37:24 +0000 Staff https://allaboutbeer.net/?p=31518 (Press Release)

DENVER—After years of consumer requests, the beers of Utah’s original craft brewers, Wasatch and Squatters, are now available in Colorado. Colorado beer lovers can now purchase award-winning beers from Squatters (including IPA, Full Suspension, Chasing Tail and Hop Rising) and Wasatch (including Polygamy Porter, Devastator, Ghostrider and Apricot Hefeweizen).

“I’m a Colorado native,” says Dan Burick, Squatters and Wasatch head brewer and a 24-year veteran of the craft beer trade. “I’ve been taking our beers backpacking and fishing in the Colorado high country for years, and carrying them over the Rockies to the Great American Beer Festival since 1992 when we won our first GABF medal. Many beers and medals later, we’re finally responding to beer-lover demand and bringing our beers to my home state.”

Wasatch founder Greg Schirf says the move to Colorado also hinged on the state’s highly educated beer populace. “We were looking to expand our reach,” Schirf says. “So why not jump into one of the country’s savviest beer states? Especially when it’s right next door and people there have been drinking and asking for our beer for over 20 years. Now Coloradoans can enjoy their Polygamy legally.”

Since 1992, Squatters and Wasatch have won 17 World Beer Cup awards and 26 GABF medals. In 2010, Wasatch and Squatters Craft Beers (aka Utah Brewers Cooperative) was named Mid-Size Brewery of the Year by the Brewers Association. The two breweries were founded by fun-loving beer pioneers who literally helped write the rules for Utah craft beer.

Their award winning beers will be served at the Great American Beer Festival, October 10-12 at the Colorado Convention Center at booths M17 (Squatters) and M18 (Wasatch).

From Wasatch Beers –

  • Polygamy Porter Nitro (4% ABV Brown Porter on Nitro) — A Gold and Silver Medal World Beer Cup winner, this dark, medium-bodied but super-drinkable ale has inviting chocolate and malt flavors that fade into a slightly dry, silky-smooth finish. DRAFT magazine rating: 94

  • Devastator (8% ABV Double Bock) — This dark amber lager has a rich malty body and a creamy white head. Its strong bready aroma, tied in with a hint of caramel aroma and flavor, makes this beer deceptively smooth and delicious.
  • Ghostrider (6% ABV White India Pale Ale) — A twist on a traditional American IPA, this brew uses extra-pale malted barley and wheat to keep the color very light (almost white – like a ghost). Quaffable and refreshing with a huge citrus note and a touch of coriander.
  • Apricot Hefeweizen (4% ABV Apricot Hefeweizen) — A three-time North American Brewers Association winner, this traditional German-style unfiltered wheat beer is brewed with a hybridized Bavarian yeast that lends flavor notes of licorice, clove, and banana.

From Squatters Beers –

  • Hop Rising (9% ABV Double India Pale Ale) — Strong and complex, this luscious beer uses hefty amounts of three different malts and three varieties of hops, including a hearty dose of dry hops. It’s brewed with two pounds of hops per barrel. The hop farmer on the beer’s label is award-winning Squatters brewmaster Jason Stock. Ratebeer.com rating: 96

  • IPA (6.5% ABV American India Pale Ale) — This classic American IPA has a copper color, an intense hop aroma and a distinctly crisp bitterness on its finish. In its 16-year history it has been recognized with a World Beer Cup Gold Medal and four Great American Beer Festival medals.  DRAFT magazine rating: 95

  • Full Suspension Pale Ale (4% ABV English Pale Ale) — This double-gold-winning Northwest style pale ale has great balance between the malty English barley and aromatic hops from Washington’s Yakima Valley. Unfiltered and dry-hopped.
  • Chasing Tail Golden Ale (4% ABV English-style Summer Ale) — A two-time GABF medalist, this inviting golden ale is brewed with premium English barley and English Golding and Fuggles hops. The result is a superb session beer with subtle malts and delicate bitterness and aroma.

About Utah Brewers Cooperative

In 1986, Greg Schirf opened Utah’s first microbrewery, Wasatch Beers and Brewpub, in the resort town of Park City. A few years later, Jeff Polychronis and Peter Cole opened Squatters, Salt Lake’s original brewpub in 1989; they currently operate five restaurants. In 2000, Wasatch and Squatters merged their microbrewery operations for draft and bottle production, creating the Utah Brewers Cooperative. To date, Squatters and Wasatch beers have won 17 World Beer Cup Awards; a number surpassed by only three other U.S. craft brewers on the Brewers Association’s Top 50 list. Squatters and Wasatch bottled and draft beers are available in liquor stores, restaurants, clubs, hotels, resorts, grocery and convenience stores throughout Utah, Wyoming, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska, Oregon, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Colorado. LONGMONT, CO—Jake Smith, A.K.A, The White Buffalo, took a break from promoting his new album, “Shadows, Greys & Evil Ways,” to stop by the original Oskar Blues brewery in Lyons, CO to brew a batch of “The White Buffalo West Coast IPA”—a sessionable, hop-filled collaboration brew concocted after the California-based musician’s favorite style of beer.

“I’m a beer drinker,” said Smith, who together with a team of Oskar Blues brewers created a light-bodied, heavily-hopped West Coast-style White IPA featuring Centennial, Simcoe, and Galaxy hops. “I mostly drink IPAs, that’s why I wanted to create something light but hoppy. As a beer drinker, that’s what I’m drawn to.”

Fans of both The White Buffalo and Oskar Blues can stop by the brewery’s website for a FREE exclusive download of “Don’t You Want It” from the Buffalo’s latest album. Fans can also check out behind-the-scenes footage from Smith’s brew day in August, which ended with a surprise performance at the Tasty Weasel tap room.  Check out the behind the scenes video via the Oskar Blues YouTube channel at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=19bMOuPSVjE and visithttp://www.oskarblues.com/dont-you-want-it-the-white-buffalo to for the exclusive FREE download.

Fresh off of his latest album release on September 10, Smith will get the chance to drink a pint of his collaborative brewing efforts when he lands in Colorado to headline Oskar Blues’ two-day beer and music-centric festival happening in downtown Denver. FBAG – Fuh-CAN Beer and Guitars (www.fbagblowout.com ) will take over Sculpture Park all dayFriday (Oct. 11) and all day Saturday (Oct. 12) of the Great American Beer Festival where “The White Buffalo West Coast IPA” will be served with a slew of Oskar Blues beers as well a variety of craft brews from a handful of other local breweries.

FBAG – a joint party hosted by Oskar Blues Brewery and Denver-based non-profit—Love, Hope, Strength will feature full-day line-ups of a mix of local and national bands currently rockin’ the live music circuit. Smith, with full band in tow, will headline festivities on Friday night, following performances by local bands—Interstate Stash Express, Bonnie and the Clyde’s, Musketeer Gripweed and Jeff Brinkman. Kyle Hollingsworth of The String Cheese Incident will close the party down on Saturday night after Denver favorites, The Congress, and other local bands hit the outdoor stage.

Craft beer lovers in town for the Great American Beer Festival can listen to some tunes while they drink ColoRADo-made craft beers and munch on a range of menu items from three of Oskar Blues’ restaurant locations—the original Lyons-based Grill & Brew, and Longmont’s CHUBurger and soon-to-be-opened CyclHops—a bike cantina and home of REEB Cycles retail location set to open at the end of the year.

And if drinking beers and catching some killer live music isn’t enough—a portion of the ticket sales from the event will be split between the Love, Hope, Strength Foundation (www.lovehopestrength.org )and the Oskar Blues CAN’d Aid Foundation’s Colorado Flood Relief Fund. New Belgium Brewing Challenges Craft Brewing Brethren to a Carving Contest https://allaboutbeer.net/daily-pint/whats-brewing/2013/09/31451/ https://allaboutbeer.net/daily-pint/whats-brewing/2013/09/31451/#comments Mon, 30 Sep 2013 19:39:36 +0000 Staff https://allaboutbeer.net/?p=31451 (Press Release)

FORT COLLINS, CO—With fall officially here and pumpkin beers flying off the shelves, New Belgium decided to challenge other pumpkin-beer-making, craft brewers to a carving contest. New Belgium and six craft breweries have put their knife skills to the test and the final pumpkins for The Big Craft CarveOff are on display atNewBelgium.com/CraftCarveOff. Public voting for the favorite begins October 3 and runs through October 15 at Eater.com. New Belgium will donate $5,000 to a charity of the winner’s choice.

“There’s a proud tradition of pumpkin beer brewing every fall among craft brewers and we figured a great way to celebrate the change of seasons is a good old-fashioned carving contest” said New Belgium Spokesperson, Bryan Simpson. “Several of our brewing buddies jumped on board and did amazing, magical feats to transform simple gourds into works of art.”
New Belgium’s carved entry celebrates its current seasonal release, Pumpkick Ale. Pumpkick is brewed with plenty of pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice, but it is the healthy dose of cranberries that really makes it stand out.

Other breweries participating in the carving contest include: Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, Brooklyn Brewery, Cigar City Brewing, Cambridge Brewing Company, Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales, Saint Arnold Brewing and Schlafly Beer.

“It was a little tricky for some breweries to find pumpkins this early in the season, so we actually had to ship some from Fort Collins,” added Simpson. “The results speak volumes as to how many creative folks we have in our industry. Pretty inspiring. ”

To keep up with the contest, you can follow the hashtag #CraftCarveOff on Twitter and Instagram. New Belgium will also post updates at http://www.newbelgium.com/CraftCarveoff, on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/newbelgium and on Twitter @NewBelgium. If you have a pumpkin you’d like to show off, use #CraftCarveOff to post your pumpkin pictures on Twitter and Instagram.

Oskar Blues Launches Nonprofit Foundation https://allaboutbeer.net/daily-pint/whats-brewing/2013/09/oskar-blues-launches-nonprofit-foundation/ https://allaboutbeer.net/daily-pint/whats-brewing/2013/09/oskar-blues-launches-nonprofit-foundation/#comments Wed, 25 Sep 2013 21:25:17 +0000 Staff https://allaboutbeer.net/?p=31310 (Press Release)

LONGMONT, CO—Since their inception in 1997, the folks at Oskar Blues have been committed to giving back to the communities in which their businesses grow and thrive. Over the years, the Oskar Blues Brewery and restaurants have provided support to those in need by organizing a variety of solutions like canned food and clothing drives at each of their locations during the holidays, to making monetary donations to local organizations.  “With just one point-in-time donation to our organization, Oskar Blues fed 5,000 people. Successful businesses can make a huge difference to the communities they live in,” said Edwina Salazar, executive director of the OUR Center.

For Oskar Blues’ owner/founder, Dale Katechis, helping people and giving back to the community is something that Oskar Blues has always been engaged in. In September of 2013, Katechis created the “Oskar Blues CAN’d Aid Foundation” to allow that engagement to expand at a local and national level.  “It’s been a 15 year mission for me to organize a way to give back to the communities that helped build our businesses,” Katechis said.

Although the “CAN’d Aid Foundation” will develop national partnerships in a variety of focus areas including outdoor recreation, arts and music, and environmental sustainability, the foundation’s immediate focus will be on maximizing fundraising efforts for the expedited distribution of monies to the communities of Lyons and Longmont, CO; two areas that recently experienced massive devastation during severe flooding that struck the Front Range of Colorado. Many Oskar Blues employees, friends and family of the company were severely impacted by the floods, and Katechis’ main goal is to support immediate recovery efforts for those affected in both communities.

Diana Ralston, the executive director of the “CAN’d Aid Foundation” echoed Katechis’ sentiments about flood relief efforts, stating, “at Oskar Blues, our community is our family, and the recent massive flooding along the Front Range left a lot of our Colorado family members without homes, without towns, and in desperate need of help getting back on their feet. Fast-tracking our 501(c)(3) allows us to be a part of a long-term strategy to provide help to areas damaged by the flooding.”

With Ralston at the helm, several Oskar Blues fundraising opportunities are in place to support flood relief efforts at the local level.

Put a CAN’d Aid on it. Monetary donations can be made in the form of a check or online at http://www.foundation.oskarblues.com

Through the week of the Great American Beer Festival (September 22 through October 13), all Oskar Blues locations including Homemade Liquids and SolidsCHUBurger, and the Tasty Weasel tap rooms (Colorado and North Carolina) are donating $1 from every Oskar Blues brew purchased.

REEB Cycles, Oskar Blues’ bike company, is donating $200 from every frame or complete bike sold during the month of October.

Oskar Blues will also hype up flood relief fundraising efforts during the week of the Great American Beer Festival by donating a portion of the proceeds from the FBAG- Beer and Guitars, two-day festival in Sculpture Park in downtown Denver to the Oskar Blues Flood Relief Fund. The festival thrown in collaboration with the Love, Hope, Strength Foundation, will feature live music by 18 bands including The White Buffalo, The Kyle Hollingsworth Band, Bonnie and the Clyde’s, The Congress, and many more to be announced via http://fbagblowout.com/

Odell Brewing Introduces Fernet Aged Porter https://allaboutbeer.net/daily-pint/whats-brewing/2013/09/odell-brewing-introduces-fernet-aged-porter/ https://allaboutbeer.net/daily-pint/whats-brewing/2013/09/odell-brewing-introduces-fernet-aged-porter/#comments Tue, 24 Sep 2013 19:09:47 +0000 Staff https://allaboutbeer.net/?p=31285

(Press Release)

FORT COLLINS, CO—In late September, Odell Brewing will release Fernet Aged Porter, a robust imperial porter aged in emptied Fernet barrels from Colorado distiller, Leopold Bros.

“We have always been huge fans of Leopold Bros.,” said Brent Cordle pilot brew and barrel aging manager at Odell Brewing. “We’ve experimented with a variety of barrels, but Leopold’s Fernet was by far the most unique oak we’ve had the pleasure of working with.”

Fernet is a dark minty liqueur made with herbs & spices and aged in oak barrels. Leopold Bros. has crafted their own unique recipe which includes lavender, honeysuckle, ginger root, bitter aloe, dandelion root, rose petals, chamomile, and peppermint.

“Our Fernet is the most bitter type of Amaro (Italian word for bitter) that is prepared by steeping various botanicals, with a large proportion of bitter roots, in spirit,” said distiller Todd Leopold, “so far as we are aware, it is the first of its kind produced in America since well before Prohibition.”

Odell Brewing began collecting the emptied Fernet barrels, as they became available over the past year, and filled them with a rich porter. The herb-soaked oak has a remarkable effect on the beer. With an 9.8% ABV, the roasty chocolate malt character is infused with hints of mint and licorice creating a decadent aroma and flavor.

Odell Brewing and Leopold Bros. will celebrate their partnership with a special release party on September 26th at7:00 p.m. at Freshcraft in Denver, and in the brewery’s Tap Room on September 28th and 29th. Fernet Aged Porter will be available in limited quantities throughout the brewery’s ten state distribution footprint.

About Odell Brewing – Founded in 1989, Odell Brewing was started by Doug Odell, his wife Wynne, and his sister Corkie. Twenty-four years later, the culture of family and collaboration still thrives fostering a brewery full of beer-centric people. It is this passion for beer that inspires Odell Brewing to create quality, hand-crafted, innovative brews. As a regional craft brewery, Odell Brewing is committed to serving the communities in which it distributes by minimizing its environmental impact, sourcing local raw materials, and through its charitable giving program known as Odell Outreach. Odell Brewing was named a “Best Company to Work For” in 2013 by ColoradoBiz Magazine and is an award winning brewery, nationally and internationally: 2012 Brewers Association Recognition Award, 2011 Great American Beer Festival® – gold medal for Friek, 2008 World Beer Cup® – gold for IPA. 2007 Great American Beer Festival® – gold medal for IPA.

About Leopold Bros. - Leopold Bros. is a family owned and operated small batch distillery located in Denver, Colorado.  Founded in 1999.Todd Leopold got his start in distilling after he received his Diploma in Malting and Brewing from the Siebel Institute of Technology in Chicago in 1996. After graduation, he trained at the Doemens School in Munich, focusing on the production of lager beers. He then apprenticed at several breweries and distilleries throughout Germany. Scott Leopold began his career in manufacturing after receiving a B.A. in Economics and a B.S. in Industrial Engineering from Northwestern University and a Masters in Environmental Engineering from Stanford University.  He spent the early part of his career engineering environmentally sustainable manufacturing processes for Fortune 500 companies, as well as designing waste water treatment systems for both industry and municipalities. Together, the Leopold Brothers designed and developed a unique distillery in which environmental sustainability is a daily practice, and the art and science of fermentation and distillation is practiced at the highest possible level.
