A brown beer, but does not actually fit into any one style. A stylistic mash up of English Browns, Germans Alts, and Irish Reds. A drinkable and sessionable brown beer.

A 5.5 percent brown ale with a bow to German Altbier and Irish Red as well as English mild ale. A glowing deep bronze rather than brown, it has a superb aroma of freshly-baked rye bread, cigar smoke and caramelized fruit, with a good peppery hop note. Sweet malt coats the tongue but is not cloying; it’s well balanced by raisin and sultana fruit and a continuing peppery hop character. The finish loses the sweetness of the palate and is dry, with a late burst of hop bitterness and burnt fruit. Give some to the farmer’s wife before she chases those poor mice!

The beer is deep russet and the foam is notable—it rises into a fine crown and stays a while. The aroma is light, all white bread toast and singed sugar, with just a little bit of fruit. The malts are dry and steely on the palate, showing only a hint of the roast suggested by the color. The hops lay low and crisp, riding out to a clean finish. It all combines into an impression like a more robust version of some Mexican dark lagers. And carne asada tacos will not go amiss.
