The Poet

December 23, 2014

New Holland BrewingThe Poet

New Holland Brewing Co.

Holland, MI

Type of Beer: Oatmeal stout

ABV: 5.2%

Because a new year is a reason to wax poetic, here’s an inky black ale with a coffee-colored head to peer into while doing some self examination. Aromas of coffee and raisin rise and swirl from the glass, with hints of prune and chocolate. The cocoa becomes more apparent on the tongue. It’s satisfyingly smooth but with a big body. It has all the elements of a certain mass-produced Irish stout, but is more beefed up, solid and satisfying. This staves off the winter chill.

This beer was reviewed by John Holl, Dustan Lilas, Lee Movic and Kelsey Roth on Dec. 5, 2014, at the Craft Beer Cellar in Belmont, MA. Read more reviews from the tasting.

I am coincidentally drinking a Poet at this moment. You are so right, it is very flavorful, and I like what it is not, its not too syrupy sweet like a higher abv can be, it doesnt reek of alcohol like an imperial stout. It isnt one dimensional either, like the stouts of 1999 Michigan were. In short, this is my new go to stout, not too boozy, not too bland, but just right.

This is a very good beer! My wife and I visited the Taproom back in July!
