Sunrise Oatmeal Pale Ale

January 1, 2013
Reviewers:Lisa Morrison - Jeff Evans

Fort George Brewery

Astoria, OR

Creamy session-style American Pale Ale with a dry nature, mild bitterness and hop aroma.  This beer is based on the first beer ever produced at the Fort George Brewery, Beer #1. 50 pounds of oatmeal were added to make it even better.

ABV: 5.2

ABW: 4.7

COLOR: 4.75

BITTERNESS: 46

ORIGINAL GRAVITY: 1052

AVAILABLE: OR, WA

This beer, from Oregon’s north coast, pours the color of a bright summer sunrise: pale golden yellow, with a white cloud of a head. Among giant citrusy aromas and subsequent flavors of grapefruit and lemon peel, the oatmeal sneaks in ever so lightly on both the nose and the palate before gently gracing the beer with a silkiness that glides across your tongue. But don’t let that genteel nature fool you; Sunrise Oatmeal Pale Ale is assertively hopped up enough to hold your attention from sunrise to well beyond sunset.
- Lisa Morrison
An oatmeal pale ale. I’ve not come across one of these before but I’m expecting something firmly hoppy and, because of the oatmeal, perhaps a little creamy. And so it turns out. The nose is a luscious fruit cocktail of fresh hop aromas—orange, grapefruit, melon, mango, even a little cucumber—and the taste, surprisingly bitter to start, also majors on tropical and citrus fruits as those hops really bite into the palate. Sweet, smooth cereal notes just offset that robust bitterness before a finish that is full of pithy grapefruit, very dry and slightly chewy.
