As popular London porters came to be brewed in stronger versions, they were initially described as “stout” porters. In time, the porter and stout styles diverged.

Chocolate, mocha, whetstone, roasted malt and hints of coffee greet your nose when you pour this stout, brewed to commemorate Gen. Stephen Moylan, Irish-born commander of the 4th Continental Dragoons during the American Revolutionary War. First sips reveal hints of milk chocolate, light licorice and roasted coffee. As Dragoons warms up (and do let it warm up!), the head lingers like lace and the flavors become more complex. A worthy tribute.

This deep ruby-colored beer provides all you expect from a dry stout, from nose to tail. Those biscuity aromas of bitter chocolate and coffee, supported by creamy caramel, really set the scene. Then the play unfolds on the tongue with more of those same roasted grain flavors, cleverly balancing a charcoal-like bitterness with a smooth background sweetness. Am I being unfair to suggest that there’s a touch of astringency building on the palate and lingering in the prolonged finish, just taking a little of the shine off the coffee and chocolate bitterness? Maybe I am. It’s a fine beer.
