This pale ale is brewed with American hops and is unfiltered and unpasteurized. It comes in an attractive package—a pint bottle with a foil cap. It has a hazy pale bronze color and a powerful “cat’s pee” aroma from the hops that gives way to brash citrus fruit, sappy malt and spicy resins. Tangy hops dance on the tongue with a fine balance of ripe mango, grapefruit and apricot, with a solid backbone of juicy malt. The long and complex finish has a quinine-like bitterness along with bittersweet fruit and spicy hops.

The beer is hazy full gold, and the fluffy white foam stands its ground, but it’s not your eyes that are at work. The nose presents itself immediately, and quite a nose it is. American hop growers will tell you that among brewers few things will divide a room like “allium” character in hops, aromatics reminiscent of onions and garlic. It’s usually West Coast brewers who favor these dank hops, but Lawson’s brings that sensibility East. Finely tuned and well-balanced, this beer smells like papaya, sage, chives and weed. If you’re saying, “Yes, please!” then go for it with duck in Thai green curry.
