They designed this as a dessert beer and call it a tripel but it looks like a dubbel, deep red-brown in color. That doesn’t detract from the enjoyment for one second. This is a mouth-filling, mostly sweet and winey beer that drinks far, far lighter than its 10.4% would suggest. Alcohol is brilliantly controlled, and what might be cloying flavors of raisin, chocolate and treacly malt are well-grounded by a soft bitterness that has a little orangelike hop character. The finish, which is quite thick, features nut and chocolate and leaves a pleasant glow.

A dark russet brown Spanish ale with a big chocolate, caramel and vanilla nose balanced by gentle peppery hops and toasted grain. Sweet chocolate coats the palate with roasted/toasted grain, caramel and butterscotch, with a fine and delicate balance of hop resins. Dark, burnt fruits, toasted grain, chocolate and caramel are to the fore in the big finish, but the light but persistent spicy hops provide a fine balance.
