Wichita V6 IPA

June 12, 2017

Wichita Brewing Co.

V6 IPA
Wichita, Kansas
Style: India Pale Ale ABV: 7%

Version No. 6 of this IPA’s recipe turned out to be the best, and this is hopped with Cascade and Amarillo.

This golden-bodied brew pours pretty in the glass, with a bright white head that clings to the sides of the vessel, leaving lots of lovely, frothy lace. Spicy, resinous aromas lift from the glass atop a hint of caramel. Flavors mimic the nose with a big dose of pine notes alongside citrus and a touch of earthiness and spice. Clean malt provides a perfect foil for the hops in this beer. A nice, solid IPA that would pair perfectly with a summer day at the river or any other outdoor pursuit.

Lisa Morrison has been writing about beer for nearly 20 years. She also owns Belmont Station, a well-known bottle shop and taproom in Portland, Oregon.

Hazy and pushing orange, the beer holds up an off-white foam. The aroma is a blend of slightly musty orange peel and vaguely cheesy “hop pocket” aromatics. The bitterness would be considered moderate these days, but there is little malt flavor to oppose it. The finish is a little brusque, showing a tannic edge. Less smooth than some, but a large ham-on-rye will fix that right up. Yes, of course I want mayo.
