B3K Black Lager

January 1, 2013
Reviewers:Roger Protz - Garrett Oliver

Wynkoop Brewing Co.

Denver, CO

This German-style schwarzbier features roasted flavors, understated hops and a hint of smoke. A 2008 GABF gold medal winner, it’s a thirst-quenching version of dark beer that’s scintillating and sessionable.

ABV: 5.1

ABW: 4.08

COLOR: N/A

BITTERNESS: 19

ORIGINAL GRAVITY: 1310

AVAILABLE: CO

This is an award-winning American interpretation of a German schwarzbier, deepest brown rather than black. It’s 5.5 percent and it has a rich smoky and toasted grain aroma with licorice and spicy hops. The palate has a delicious hint of a British yeast extract savory called Marmite that’s spread on crackers, along with licorice, coffee, roasted grain and peppery hops. Roasted grain, smoky notes, coffee, licorice and spicy hops all linger tantalizingly in the delectable finish.
- Roger Protz
Blacker than most, this schwarzbier raises a short-lived tan head. The aroma is lightly chocolaty, with a slight whiff of metal reminiscent of a jar full of coins. The palate opens crisply with moderate bitterness up front, quickly met by smooth roasted malts. Dry throughout, it shows a little caramel, a little cocoa, and glides out and finishes cleanly. This is a nicely brewed version of the style, with a bit more going on than some of the German originals. Your burger will be well pleased.
