(Press Release)
ASHEVILLE, N.C.—Asheville Brewing Company will release Bier LemonGrass Tyson, a white ale infused with lemongrass and coriander, on Tuesday, June 13—the day that renowned scientist and beer lover, Neil deGrasse Tyson, will speak at Asheville’s Thomas Wolfe Auditorium.
The beer will be available on draft at Asheville and in very limited quantities of 22-ounce bottles from Asheville Brewing’s north and downtown locations. A dollar from every pint and bottle sold will be donated to the new Asheville Museum of Science.
“We wanted to make a beer to celebrate science and to honor one of science’s rock stars coming to our town,” says Mike Rangel, Asheville Brewing president. “We found an online video where deGrasse Tyson talks about beer styles he likes and how much he appreciates local beer. We heard you, Neil, and we made this beer for you!”
Bier LemonGrass Tyson is an American-style take on a traditional Belgian wit beer, brewed with German malt, Belgian yeast, and dry-hopped with Galaxy (of course). Lemongrass, sweet orange peel, and coriander are added in the boil to produce a flavorful, easy-drinking beer at 5.5% ABV.
“The pronounced fruit notes of Galaxy hops softens and balances the spice character of the Belgian yeast, while the lemongrass and orange peel add a layer of complexity to the flavors,” says Pete Langheinrich, Asheville Brewing head brewer.

About Asheville Brewing Company
Asheville’s third craft brewery opened in 1998 as a mash-up pizza joint, second-run movie theater, and brewpub, all wrapped up in a bright, happy, family-friendly space. The brewpub’s popularity with both locals and visitors enabled a second location, including a 15-barrel brew house, to open in downtown Asheville in 2006. Asheville Brewing installed Western North Carolina’s first in-house canning line in 2011. The Merrimon Avenue mothership’s original 7-barrel system joined the Coxe Avenue brewery in early 2016, consolidating all brewing operations under one roof. The brew crew produced 6,500 barrels of beer in 2016, up from 1,200 barrels in 2011. Asheville Brewing Company’s flagship and one-off brews are distributed on draft, in 12-ounce cans, and in special release 22-ounce bottles throughout Western North Carolina via family-owned wholesaler, Budweiser of Asheville.
