Magee: Lagunitas to Drop Lawsuit Against Sierra Nevada
One day after filing a trademark infringement lawsuit against Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., Lagunitas Brewing Co. founder Tony Magee said on Tuesday his company will drop the suit.
Magee made the announcement from his personal Twitter account.
Today, January 13th 2015, has been the worst day ever in 23 years of growing my brewery. Worst. Growing a biz involves defending a biz…

Defending a biz requires answers to Hard Questions. Q's like: Are our Foundations Strong? Are our Flavors right? Are our Labels Defensible?

There r many Courts in the world. For me, over the last month, one Court was a series of rebuffed phone calls. Another was a court of law…

Today was in the hands of the ultimate court; The Court of Public Opinion and in it I got an answer to my Question; Our IPA's TM has limits.

I don't know every answer beforehand, so I feel around for the edges and try to learn. Today I was seriously schooled & I heard you well…

Tomorrow mornin we'll Drop the Infringement Suit & get back to answering other Questions. I don't think I was wrong for wanting to know cuz…

I had to know the Answer, but the Answer came much sooner than I thought and in a different Court than I thought it would. Can I say thanks?

Sierra who? Always be a Lagunitas fan. Lawsuit or not!
I’m sorry he had to go through this, but my question is: Really?
Did you not have sensible people advising you that this was an utterly ridiculous and baseless suit. I mean come on.
So stupid.
you did the right thing by listening to your consumers. Could the label be confused with Sierra Nevada’s? Possibly, if that particular individual either can’t read, or is so new to craft beer, they think they are all the same. If it’s the latter, they probably haven’t experienced anything outside of PBR, and the experience of what good beer is supposed to be, would be face melting for them
Glad you came to your senses.
Really there’s about 1,000 other IPA’s that have a large IPA in all caps emblazoned on the bottle, whats with the witchunt on Sierra? I bet there is way more to this story than alleged copyright infringement issues.
Silly. I made a drive from LA to Oregon stopping at breweries, missed Lagunitas in Petaluma ( we used to call it Chicken City while I attended rival Novato HS due to the poultry egg production). I did make the drive to Chico, so you know where my loyalties lie. Next time I’m in town from Houston, it will be a coin toss if I make the drive to Petaluma.
