HOMEBREWING

Water worries? Send in your water analysis

In July, I'll begin a discussion of how to treat common brewing waters for brewing various styles of beer. If you know the mineral content of your local water, send me the key information shown below. In July, I'll include actual water profiles from readers in different parts of the country and talk about different strategies for water treatment.

If you don't know the composition of your water, call your local public water supply and ask for an analysis. They will usually send one in the mail at no charge.

Water chemistry values are usually reported in ppm or mg/l. These two values are equivalent and interchangable.

Here are the values you should e-mail to Brewing editor Ray Daniels:

Alkalinity*
Calcium
Chloride
Hardness
Iron
Magnesium
pH
Sodium
Sulfate

* Alkalinity may be stated as CaCO3, CO3, or "carbonate" content.
