Flemish Style Brown Ale

All About Beer Magazine - Volume 32, Issue 4
September 1, 2011
- -

98 The Dissident, Deschutes Brewery (OR) 2008. 9% ABV (9/10)
Brilliant deep reddish copper color. Aromas of spiced apple, exotic nougat and sourdough yeast. Zesty with supple carbonation and a dry-yet-fruity medium-to-full body. Long, densely packed finish with cherry jam, cider vinegar and cracked pink pepper notes. A world-class sour beer that is deliciously appetizing; pair with pheasant stew, cassoulet or duck confit.

92 Madame Rose, Goose Island Beer Co. (IL) 2010. 6.5% ABV (5/11)
Deep clear copper color. Lavish aromas of dried sour cherries, Amarone wine, cocoa, nuts and delicate spice with a tart, fruity-yet-dry medium-full body and a long, tangy apple cider vinegar and pomegranate molasses finish. A sensational sour beer that will triumph at the table with strong cheeses.

89 Flamboyant Wild Red, Arbor Brewing Co. (MI). 9% ABV (5/11)
Cloudy copper brown color. Tangy, yeasty vinous aromas of fermenting apples and nuts with a supple, tart dryish medium-to-full body and a great mélange of sour citrus, cherry yogurt and dusty wood notes. A nice take on the style.

89 Lait de Mere, Bastone Brewery (MI). 7% ABV (5/11) %{Brewpub}
Rich reddish brown color. Aromas and flavors of caramel buttercream on banana cake and strawberry yogurt with a frothy, tangy, dry-yet-fruity medium-to-full body and a crisp, refreshing citrus, sour cherry skin, nut and grassy earth finish. Very zesty, will be great at the table with spicy pork dishes.
