EUGENE, OR—Last week, Denver, Colorado hosted the 2013 Great American Beer Festival (GABF), an annual, three-day beer festival and one of the most coveted beer competitions in the brewing industry. Presented by the Brewers Association, GABF is the largest national beer competition that recognizes the most outstanding beers produced in the nation.

In an award ceremony held on Oct. 13 at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver, the top three winners in the competition’s 84 beer-style categories were announced. Jamie Floyd, Ninkasi’s founding brewer and co-owner, and other Ninkasi team members excitedly accepted an award on-stage as the brewery was presented with a gold medal in the Bohemian-Style Pilsener beer-style category for its Bohemian Pilsner. In total, 53 beers from breweries across the nation competed in this category.

Released in July 2013, Ninkasi’s Bohemian Pilsner was brewed under its Rare and Delicious Series, offering limited-release beers that are creative expressions of its brewing collective. The beer itself was released specifically for the 26th Oregon Brewers Festival, and is a Ninkasi take on the traditional Bohemian-Style Pilsener. Ninkasi’s Bohemian Pilsner is a medium-bodied golden lager with spicy floral aromas from the styles signature hop, Saaz.

“Winning gold or any medal for a Bohemian-Style Pilsener is an incredible achievement for us as brewers,” explains Floyd. “This is an incredibly difficult beer to make and we love to show that we are as committed to making delicious lagers as much as we are to the hoppy beers we are associated with.”

Set to release in January 2014, Ninkasi will release its Bohemian Pilsner as the next beer in its Prismatic Lager Series. Renamed after the Czech word for truth, Pravda will be available in 12oz. bottles and on-draft January through April 2014.

“This style has been produced for centuries in Europe so we are excited to share this delicious lager with our fans as a true representation of the style,” says Floyd.

Ninkasi’s complete line-up of beers can be found at: www.NinkasiBrewing.com/beers.

Mims, Carolina Brewing Co. Debut Wet Hop IPA https://allaboutbeer.net/daily-pint/whats-brewing/2013/10/mims-carolina-brewing-co-debut-wet-hop-ipa/ https://allaboutbeer.net/daily-pint/whats-brewing/2013/10/mims-carolina-brewing-co-debut-wet-hop-ipa/#comments Wed, 16 Oct 2013 17:42:30 +0000 Staff https://allaboutbeer.net/?p=31640 (Press Release)

RALEIGH, NC—After several years spent cultivating their own hops, Mims Distributing Company, a beer distributor that services a nine-county area in and around the Triangle region, has announced the debut of Carolina Wet Hop IPA. It’s the first beer brewed with hops harvested from the distributor’s hops field. Produced in partnership with Carolina Brewing Company, Carolina Wet Hop IPA will soon be available to select local retailers for a limited time.

Carolina Wet Hop IPA is a single batch brewed with more than 22 pounds of Cascade hops from Mims Distributing’s hops field adjacent to its Ebenezer Church Road location. Four pounds of Willamette hops from Dragonfly Farm in Franklin County add to the craft brew’s earthy and piney aroma. Carolina Brewing Company adds Pale, Carapils and Caramel malts and extra nugget hops for bitterness.

A separate Cask Ale, also brewed from the Carolina Wet Hop IPA batch, has dried whole cones of Mims Distributing’s Cascade hops and Willamette’s Dragonfly hops, which undergo a secondary fermentation to ensure maximum flavor. The company will open the cask with Carolina Brewing later this fall in celebration of their partnership.

Inspired by partner brewery Sierra Nevada, who grows its own hops in Chico, Calif., Mims Distributing started growing hops in its own field in 2011 with the goal of partnering with a local brewer to produce a craft beer truly local to the Triangle. The brewery chosen by Mims Distributing, Carolina Brewing Company in Holly Springs, N.C., has brewed more than a dozen year-round, seasonal and special brews since 1994.

Harpoon’s Grateful Harvest Ale Celebrates Thanksgiving https://allaboutbeer.net/daily-pint/whats-brewing/2013/10/harpoons-grateful-harvest-ale-celebrates-thanksgiving/ https://allaboutbeer.net/daily-pint/whats-brewing/2013/10/harpoons-grateful-harvest-ale-celebrates-thanksgiving/#comments Tue, 15 Oct 2013 22:16:22 +0000 Staff https://allaboutbeer.net/?p=31636 (Press Release)

BOSTON—The Harpoon Brewery is proud to bring back Grateful Harvest Ale, a New England cranberry ale brewed in the Thanksgiving spirit of giving back to the community.  For every 6-pack of Grateful Ale sold, the Harpoon Brewery will make a $1 donation to the local food bank in the area in which the beer was purchased.

Harpoon Grateful Harvest Ale is a beer brewed with Thanksgiving celebrations in mind.  Freshly harvested cranberries, donated by local cranberry farm A.D. Makepeace, lend a subtle tartness to the beer.  The cranberry flavor complements the malty character derived by the combination of Munich and Vienna malts. Additions of CaraMunich and Dehusked Carafa III malts enhances the beer’s reddish hue and adds a touch of sweetness, while Northern Brewer bittering hops complement the slight cranberry tartness.  A traditional top fermenting strain of ale yeast was used to showcase the malt profile and accent the fresh cranberry aroma.  The result is a medium-bodied, malty and mildly sweet amber ale with a bready aroma and a subtle cranberry flavor.

The idea for Harpoon Grateful Harvest Ale was born out of the relationships the brewery has cultivated with New England food banks throughout the years.  This beer will help raise desperately needed funds for the fight against hunger, with $1 from every 6-pack sold going to the local food bank in the area in which it was purchased. Since the beer was first released in 2010, Harpoon has donated more than $84,000 to local food banks from the sales of Grateful Harvest alone. A blog post about the beer can be found here:  http://www.harpoonbrewery.com/blog/2338/Grateful-Harvest-is-Here.

Harpoon Grateful Harvest Ale will be available on tap at the brewery’s Boston, MA and Windsor, VT facilities.  For every pint of Grateful Harvest sold at the breweries, Harpoon will make a $1 donation to their local food bank. In addition, a special pumpkin spice pretzel will be sold at the Harpoon Beer Hall in Boston, with $1 for each pretzel sold going to the local food bank.

On Sunday, November 10th, Harpoon will host the Harpoon Helps Grateful Harvest Dinner at their beer hall in Boston.  It will be a twist on the traditional Thanksgiving meal, with recipes for each dish developed by Harpoon employees.  100% of ticket sales will be donated to the Greater Boston Food Bank.

Harpoon was founded on two principles: to make great beer and to be good neighbors within their community.  Since the brewery bottled its first beer in 1986, Harpoon has endeavored to make meaningful contributions to causes that are important to them and their customers.  What started as beer donations here and there, hosting fundraisers for friends from time to time, and producing small fundraisers, has developed into one of the brewery’s most cherished programs: Harpoon Helps.  So far in 2013 alone, the Harpoon Helps program has raised more than $445,000 for local charities, donated more than 50,000 pints toward local charity events with approximately 300 local non-profits supported, and has performed thousands of volunteer hours at local organizations.

About the Harpoon Brewery
The Harpoon Brewery was founded by beers lovers, Rich Doyle and Dan Kenary.  In 1986 Harpoon was issued Brewing Permit #001 by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, since it was the first brewery to brew commercially in Boston after a dormant period of about 25 years.  Harpoon’s line of craft beer features its award-winning IPA and UFO Hefeweizen beers, along with four special seasonal selections. In 2000 Harpoon purchased a second brewery in Windsor, VT, making Harpoon the 9th largest craft brewer in the US.  Harpoon has since introduced a line of limited edition beers, the 100 Barrel Series, the Leviathan Imperial IPA, as well as the all-natural Harpoon Cider made from freshly pressed, local apples.  For more information about Harpoon beers and visiting the breweries, visit www.harpoonbrewery.com.

10 Barrel, Bluejacket and Stone Collaborate on Suede Imperial Porter https://allaboutbeer.net/daily-pint/whats-brewing/2013/10/10-barrel-bluejacket-and-stone-collaborate-on-suede-imperial-porter/ https://allaboutbeer.net/daily-pint/whats-brewing/2013/10/10-barrel-bluejacket-and-stone-collaborate-on-suede-imperial-porter/#comments Mon, 07 Oct 2013 18:15:47 +0000 Staff https://allaboutbeer.net/?p=31551

ESCONDIDO, CA—Suede evokes a sense of smooth, sexy coolness and, for some, perhaps the ‘70s. But when used to describe the latest Stone Brewing Co. collaboration, 10 Barrel/Bluejacket/Stone Suede Imperial Porter, it’s just groovy. The beer was created in collaboration with Tonya Cornett of Bend, Oregon’s 10 Barrel Brewing Co. and Megan O’Leary Parisi of Bluejacket in Washington, D.C. Starting today, the imperial porter will be available in bottles and on draft at select retailers, restaurants and bars across the U.S.

The trio of brewers met each other in typical fashion (at beer events, obviously) and began conversations that eventually led to invites from Stone Brewmaster Mitch Steele to Cornett and O’Leary Parisi to come out and brew. From there, recipe formulation began. The trio envisioned using ingredients indigenous to Southern California, which was accomplished by including avocado honey, dried jasmine, and calendula flowers plucked from the fertile grounds at Stone’s North County San Diego farmstead, Stone Farms.

The result is a luscious, smooth and flavorful beer that incorporates the deep cocoa and coffee notes of an imperial porter with a delicate but discernible bouquet of herbs and floral sweetness. “I have always enjoyed the subtleties of ingredients – botanicals, spices, sugars and other things like that, which can enhance the flavors of a base beer,” said O’Leary Parisi. “There is a certain joy to finding that balance of making your additional ingredients perfectly complementary and not overwhelming.”

At 9.6 percent alcohol by volume (ABV), the beer is ready to enjoy now, or may be properly cellared for months or years. Over time, the jasmine and calendula flowers will take a back seat to rich java and chocolate aromas and flavors. Whether enjoyed now or in the future, this beer is a brilliant example of the spectacular things that can happen when masterful brewing minds converge.

Tasting notes, provided by Stone Brewmaster Mitch Steele

Appearance: Pours deep brown with a rich tan head.
Aroma: Immediately floral, with notes of cocoa and coffee. As the beer warms, the honey aromas become more pronounced.
Taste: Jasmine and honey hit the palate first, followed by the traditional cocoa and coffee flavors that are expected in an imperial porter. The floral character is balanced by a moderate level of fruitiness.
Palate: The beer is incredibly smooth and luscious. “Suede” is the perfect name!
Overall: This was such a fun collaboration. Megan first brought forth the idea of an imperial porter, which we all immediately agreed to, and Tonya provided the malt bill. From there, we decided to add some ingredients from Southern California. The avocado honey provided a very rich, intensely floral flavor. The addition of the honey and jasmine reminds me of Southern California summers, while the calendula flowers hail from Stone Farms and bring a nice floral note and hint of bitterness. I’m very pleased at how well these flavors came through in the finished beer.

Suggested pairings, provided by Stone Craft Beer Ambassador “Dr.” Bill Sysak

SweetWater Releases Red Hot Mama https://allaboutbeer.net/daily-pint/whats-brewing/2013/10/sweetwater-releases-red-hot-mama/ https://allaboutbeer.net/daily-pint/whats-brewing/2013/10/sweetwater-releases-red-hot-mama/#comments Fri, 04 Oct 2013 23:02:47 +0000 Staff https://allaboutbeer.net/?p=31547 (Press Release)

ATLANTA—SweetWater’s Dank Tank is bringing the heat with its steamy new limited-release, Red Hot Mama. Brewers hopped up this Imperial Red Ale to draw out some fierce flavor with a super smooth finish. Red Hot Mama will roll out red-hot onto shelves the week of Oct. 14.

Story goes, Red Hot Mama was one bad chick who liked to have her way with the boys on the farm. She used and abused one particular hop farmer before hitchin’ a ride to Atlanta with a dress full of fresh hops. While looking for a new soul to steal, she met her match with El Danko. When things got steamy, clothes and hops flew all over the brewhouse. The load of fresh Centennial hops was scooped up by SweetWater’s brewers and the rest is history!

This scorchin’ American style Imperial Red is brewed with Two Row, Pilsner, Cara Munich, Chocolate,Midnight Wheat, and Wheat malts; fresh, wet Centennial hops, Chinook, Cascade, Willamette and Mt. Hood hops; and then dry hopped with Centennial and Willamette. The brew includes more than two pounds of hops per barrel and brings the heat at 8.6 percent ABV. ¡Muy caliente!

“Red Hot Mama is a hop forward Imperial Red, with a malty sweetness on the nose,” said SweetWater Head Brewer Nick Nock. “It gives a beautiful tingle on the tongue, starting really big from the fresh hop additions, and then finishing low and slow.”

Fans will find the beer on draft taps and in 22-ounce bombers at participating accounts and retailers throughout the Southeast. Red Hot Mama will be riding on though, so drinkers are reminded to get their hands on this good lookin’ gal before she’s gone.

At Great Divide Brewing Company, October signals the release of three of the brewery’s most anticipated and storied seasonal beers: Hibernation Ale, Fresh Hop Pale Ale and Oak Aged Yeti Imperial Stout. All three of these highly respected beers will be available through December.

Hibernation Ale is Colorado’s original strong ale and Great Divide’s celebrated winter tradition since 1995. This robust, dry-hopped ale has a malty richness balanced with a complex hop profile and hearty, warming character. At 8.7% ABV, Hibernation is available in 6-packs and draft. Hibernation is a three-time Great American Beer Festival medalist and boasts a Ratebeer.com score of 98.

Fresh Hop Pale Ale is a labor of love meant to be enjoyed today. Brewed every fall since 2003 with wet, whole cone hops from the Pacific Northwest, Fresh Hop is the epitome of seasonal brewing. Great Divide tells drinkers, “Don’t age it. Keep it cold. Drink it now. Savoring this delightful pale ale during harvest season ensures that its unparalleled grassy, citrus hop brilliance will remain uncompromised.” At 6.1% ABV with 55 IBUs, Fresh Hop is available in 22oz. bombers and draft. The beer has garnered a score of 98 on Ratebeer.com.

Oak Aged Yeti Imperial Stout is Yeti Imperial Stout’s sophisticated sibling. They may be from the same clan, but they have entirely different personalities. Oak aging gives a subtle vanilla character, rounding out Yeti’s intense roastiness and huge hoppy nature. Who says you can’t tame a Yeti? At 9.5% ABV, it is available in 22oz. bottles, growlers fills out of the Great Divide Tap Room and 5-gallon kegs. It boasts a perfect Ratebeer.com score of 100 and was named one of BeerAdvocate’s 2010 “Top 100 Beers On Planet Earth.”

Additionally, all three beers are available at the Great Divide Tap Room for onsite enjoyment and growler fills to-go.

Bayou Teche Releases Miel Sauvage Honey Beer https://allaboutbeer.net/daily-pint/whats-brewing/2013/09/bayou-teche-releases-miel-sauvage-honey-beer/ https://allaboutbeer.net/daily-pint/whats-brewing/2013/09/bayou-teche-releases-miel-sauvage-honey-beer/#comments Wed, 25 Sep 2013 16:17:00 +0000 Staff https://allaboutbeer.net/?p=31304

(Press Release)

ARNAUDVILLE, LA—Bayou Teche Brewing is releasing Miel Sauvage, a French-style ale crafted with honey sourced near their Arnaudville brewery.  In France, farmhouse breweries have crafted a style of beer known as Biere de Miel for centuries – it is an ale brewed with an ample amount of honey from local beekeepers.   Miel Sauvage is Cajun French for wild honey and Bayou Teche Brewing’s new beer is fermented with a beehives worth of honey from their neighbor, Bernard’s Apiaries.

Says Bayou Teche’s brewmaster Gar Hatcher, “We worked with Steve Bernard from Bernard’s Honey and tried several varieties of his locally sourced honey.  We all agreed on one obtained near the Atchafalaya Basin as the best variety for this beer.”  The brewers then worked with barley imported from France and Canada that were known to impart honey flavors into finished ale.  Continued Gar, “after fermentation was complete, we racked our Cajun-take on French honey beer into empty whiskey barrels for aging.”  Joked Gar, “the Miel Sauvage was exiled in those barrels for the same length of time that Napoleon was exiled on Elba.”  In reality, the Miel Sauvage remained in these barrels for many months and while aging the beer picked up notes of whiskey, vanilla and oak.

The label of Miel Sauvage resembles an heirloom patchwork quilt that has been embroidered with three honeybees.  Honeybees were long an emblem of French royalty and likewise three of them adorned Napoleon’s flag of exile.  The Miel Sauvage label was just named one of the best ten labels of the month by an industry website.

Miel Sauvage is a limited release – just one single batch of this beer has been brewed this year.  The ale is sorrel colored and has a pronounced honey aroma and the barrel aging contributes a smooth vanilla oakiness and whiskey flavored booziness.   The beer is available in 22 oz. Belgian style bottles and on tap at special accounts in the brewery’s distribution area.  Dorsey Knott says that Bayou Teche’s artisanal versions of elegant French ales are available in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and New York.  The beer is also available in the Arnaudville brewery’s taproom.

Bayou Teche Brewing will release Miel Sauvage officially on Sunday September 29, beginning at 12:30 by throwing a cochon de lait at the brewery located in Arnaudville, LA. The cochon de lait will be cooked over the wood from the barrels that the beer was aged in.

21st Amendment and Elysian Produce Collaboration Pumpkin Beer https://allaboutbeer.net/daily-pint/whats-brewing/2013/09/21st-amendment-and-elysian-produce-collaboration-pumpkin-beer/ https://allaboutbeer.net/daily-pint/whats-brewing/2013/09/21st-amendment-and-elysian-produce-collaboration-pumpkin-beer/#comments Wed, 25 Sep 2013 15:43:59 +0000 Staff https://allaboutbeer.net/?p=31295 (Press Release)

SAN FRANCISCO—He Said let’s brew a dark beer with pumpkin and spices and put it in a light colored can. He Said let’s brew a light beer with pumpkin and spices and put it in a dark colored can. So they did both and produced a pumpkin beer collaboration like no other: two black pumpkin beers and two white pumpkin beers, together in one box.

Brewing up a pumpkin collaboration beer should be a piece of cake for Dick Cantwell, the pumpkin king at Elysian Brewing and a slam dunk for Shaun O’Sullivan, the 21st Amendment Brewery Brewmaster who brought the world Hell or High Watermelon Wheat Beer. In truth, brewing up He Said wasn’t that hard. What proved to be more difficult was getting their story about its inception straight.

Here, straight from the mouths of the pumpkin king and one of the watermelon guys, is exactly what He Said:

Shaun: “I met Dick in 2010. He walked into our San Francisco pub, came over to Nico and me and said he’d always wanted to meet the watermelon guys.”
Dick: “I met Shaun in 1999. He walked into my Seattle pub, came over to me and said he’d always wanted to meet the pumpkin king.”
Shaun: “Later on, while I was knocking his block off at Rock’em Sock’em Robots, Dick mentioned his little pumpkin fest and suggested we attend.”
Dick: “Later on, while hatching a plan to colonize a planet entirely devoted to watermelons and pumpkins I invited him to my massive pumpkin fest.”
Shaun: “One year later, Dick asked me again. Then he kicked me in the shins until I said yes.”
Dick: “Ten years later, Shaun asked me if the invitation still stood. I punched him in the ribs and said yes.”
Shaun: “After drinking the pumpkin elixirs, I told Dick we should do a pumpkin collaboration sometime.”
Dick: “After some cajolery, Shaun and Nico begged me to do a pumpkin collaboration as soon as possible. I said we should brew a pumpkin beer like no other. A Baltic Porter with caraway and cinnamon in a light colored can. Courage!”
Shaun: “I said we should brew a pumpkin beer like no other. A Belgian Tripel with spices in a dark colored can. That’s as big time as it gets.”

He Said is a white Belgian-Style Tripel ale brewed with pumpkin, tarragon and galangal. He Said is also a black Baltic-Style Porter lager brewed with pumpkin, Vietnamese cinnamon and ground caraway. Both beers have an ABV of 8.2%.

Try them both. Two 12oz cans of each version of He Said will be packaged together in a pumpkin-colored carrier that features the likenesses of the two brewers, each telling his side of the He Said story.

Shaun O’Sullivan, Brewmaster and Co-Founder of 21st Amendment Brewery, said, “Last year I attended Elysian’s Great Pumpkin Beer Fest – and this is the truth as it happened – I lobbied Nico hard for us to brew a pumpkin ale and release it in a can.”

Nico Freccia, Co-Founder of 21st Amendment Brewery, said, “I agreed to the endeavor, but only if we could collaborate with the pumpkin king, himself: Dick Cantwell of Elysian.”

Dick Cantwell, Founder of Elysian Brewing and the Elysian Great Pumpkin Beer Fest, said, “Well, it went something like that. In the end, we decided that it would be fun to brew two unusual types of pumpkin beers – a dark and a light – and package them together. And that’s how it happened.”

He Said, part of 21st Amendment Brewery’s Insurrection Series of once-in-awhile four packs, will be available in four-packs and on draft starting in late September in all seventeen of 21st Amendment’s current distribution territories: CA, OR, WA, AK, ID, MN, OH, MA, NY, NJ, DC, MD, DE, PA, VA, GA and NC. About Elysian Brewing

Elysian operates three pubs and a production brewery in Seattle, producing 32,000 barrels a year. They don’t only make pumpkin beers, but this time of year it’s a lot of what they do, leading up to their Great Pumpkin Beer Fest on October 4, 5 and 6. Elysian has made around 300 different beers since they opened in 1996, both traditional and innovative, in large and small quantities. At least 30 of them have involved pumpkin. About 21st Amendment Brewery

Hey, we’re Nico & Shaun. We live for great beer. When we opened the 21st Amendment Brewpub in San Francisco in 2000, we vowed to do things differently. To us, the 21st Amendment means much more than just an end to Prohibition. It means the right to brew beer, the freedom to be innovative, and the obligation to have fun.
