BEER TRAVELERS READERS' COMMENTS

Victory Brewing Co., Downingtown, Pennsylvania

From Jason Ensminger & Stacey Fragis

About the place:
Prepare to have a designated driver. Beers range in alcohol from 4.4 percent to a whopping 7.6 percent (by volume)! Although in a warehouse, the atmosphere was very pleasant with an intimate touch. We went at dinnertime on a Saturday and there were enough people to feel comfortable, yet you still had your own space.

Among the beer we tasted, the overall comment would have to be smooth. The HopDevil IPA was pleasantly bitter while the Festbier has a wonderfully malty flavor. In addition to the aforementioned brews, we tried two of Victory's seasonal brews, Wild Briar Ale and Moonglow Weizenbock. The Wild Briar Ale was exceptionally smooth with a full body yet low alcohol content making it the perfect brew to enjoy with a meal. The Moonglow Weizenbock, on the other hand, was a spicy, fruity joy which was surprisingly smooth and tasty without any hint of its 7.6 percent alcohol content. Be sure to try a few of this brewpub's flavors as we were not disappointed with any.

The service was in tune with the quality of the beer. Amy B., our bartender, never left us thirsty or hungry and she was very friendly to boot! Although attentive, she was not at all pesky. The food in this joint was almost as good as the beer. We sampled a Smoked Gouda Loaf with a side order of Beer Battered Cajun Fries. Both were tasty but light, leaving plenty of room for beer.

As the other reviewer of this fine establishment mentioned, you meet with defeat rather than Victory when trying to locate Victory Brewing. For this reason we have included some directions which may be helpful.

From Philadelphia:
Take 76 west to route 202 south.
From route 202 South, get on Lancaster Avenue (Business Route 30) heading west.
Route 30 (Lancaster Avenue) runs through the middle of Downingtown.
Make a left onto Chestnut Street about 1/4 mile past the turn for route 113 (don't turn onto route 113).
After a couple of stop signs you will make a left onto Acorn Lane.
You will see an industrial complex on your right at the end of the block. Turn right into the complex at the first entrance and go straight back until you can't go anymore and Victory will be on your right.
