BEER TRAVELERS READERS' COMMENTS

Coppertank Brewing, Austin, Texas

From Terry Atkinson

Coppertank is in what looks to be an old warehouse, converted to a beerhall atmosphere. It has arches between rooms, plain walls, and little decoration. Yet it is light and airy. I preferred it over The Bitter End, because I could at least see what I was doing.

I only had time for one drink at Coppertank. I chose the pale ale. Eureka! Finally an American pale that is not hopped to high heaven. This was an excellent example of an English-style pale ale. Light, well balanced, without overwhelming hop tastes that drown out everything else, yet full of flavour. It is what in England would be called a "session beer". I was planning when my session would be, but unfortunately a family illness cut short my time in Austin.

When I was there, Coppertank's ales were $1 cheaper than Bitter End's.
