Neon Signage: A New Bend on Collecting

May 1, 2005 - Dave Gausepohl This year marks the 95th anniversary of the neon sign. In less than a century, this advertising form went from slick to sleaze, but the interest of breweries and bar owners has helped keep the medium alive.

25 Events, Inventions and Advertising Tools that Influenced Breweriana

March 1, 2005 - Dave Gausepohl 1. 4000 BC: the Sumerians brew the first beer. The clay tablets with the recipe, or the crude tools used to stir this live changing brew have to be the oldest pieces of breweriana.

    Collecting in a Winter Wonderland

January 1, 2005 - Dave Gausepohl A few years back, the state of Ohio banned a 12-pack carton of Bud Light that featured Suds Mackenzie riding in a sleigh and wearing a red hat trimmed in white. The reasoning was that this Santa-like image might influence children. Immediately, I began to acquire any type of beer item designed to celebrate Christmas.

    Not Kidding Around Anymore

November 1, 2004 - Dave Gausepohl To this day, one of the favorite items in my collection is a simple license plate that reads, “Don’t worry, Dad, we’re drinking Genesee.” This item dates back to the early 1970s. If it were to be released today, the ramifications would fill all of the major news sources. Drinking and driving—and underage drinking, at... View Article

    Beer and Politics

September 1, 2004 - Dave Gausepohl Bottle or draft? Imported or domestic? Forget politics; even in an election year, beer drinkers are more likely to debate issues like hoppy versus malty or ales versus lagers. But brewers have used politics and elections as a way to advertise their products.

    The Nineteenth Hole

July 1, 2004 - Dave Gausepohl Sporting events and activities have long been toasted, celebrated and sponsored by beer. The Super Bowl commercials are a testament to this popular relationship, as are the many articles written about beer and baseball. Now it seems that brewers are climbing onto the golf cart as golf has become a sport more accessible to all.

    The Next Generation of Brewerianists

May 1, 2004 - Dave Gausepohl My start in the hobby of breweriana collecting began with beer cans when I was about 10 years old and in the fourth grade. Beer cans made sense: they were inexpensive and could be found discarded at family functions. As I grew up, so have the hobby and the prices. What could a kid be... View Article

    Hoppy Anniversary

March 1, 2004 - Dave Gausepohl The 70th anniversary of the repeal of National Prohibition last April brought to mind a long-time collecting friend from the St. Louis area. Henry Herbst collects items pertaining to breweries celebrating particular milestones. Among his collection are a great number of cans, coasters, glassware and other items issued by breweries to toast the passing of... View Article

    The Brew Zoo Review

January 1, 2004 - Dave Gausepohl Many breweriana collectors deal with their lack of display space by specializing in a particular theme. A great specialization that is growing in popularity is the animals used in beer advertising. Within the animal theme, further specialization is possible; for example, a collector of bock beer items may pursue only advertising featuring a goat.
